BOMBING
A MASSIVE bombardment by air and sea will destroy key Iraqi military and communications centres.
American B-52s and B-2 Stealth bombers, along with British Tornado GR4s and Harrier GR7s, will release a devastating wave of 3,000 missiles in the first two days of the war. The giant assault is dubbed a ‘shock and awe campaign’ because of its effect on enemy troops
Tomahawk Cruise missiles will be fired from US and Royal Navy warships and subs in The Gulf.
The B-2s will fly from Diego Garcia, the joint US-UK air and sea refuelling and support station in the Indian Ocean.
The Tornados and Harriers will fly from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
TANK INVASION
A GIGANTIC force of American and British tanks from Kuwait will capture oil fields in the south.
They need to reach them before Saddam’s desperate troops blow them up to render them useless to the West.
The Americans have already pledged that money from the sale of the precious oil will be put in a trust for the Iraqi people after they are liberated.
After securing the oilfields, the Allied tanks will roll on to Baghdad and join in the final assault on the capital and Saddam.
Britain’s Desert Rats have Challenger II tanks and Warrior combat vehicles.
The Americans have A1/M2 Abrams tanks and Bradley combat vehicles. Apache attack helicopters will provide air support.
AMPHIBIOUS LANDING
A FEARSOME force of 4,000 Royal Marines plus their American equivalents will fight side by side to guard the eastern flank.
Their mission is to help secure Basra. The port on the Shatt al Arab waterway is vital to the Iraqi forces.
The marines will also help establish and keep open key supply routes to Baghdad.
The Royal Marines are presently on HMS Ark Royal and HMS Ocean.
They are among the most elite units in Britain’s fighting forces and specially trained for desert warfare. They played a key role in retaking the Falklands.
AIR ASSUALTS
TURKEY looks like letting the Allies launch an air invasion from the north-west to knock out Saddam’s Scud missiles before he orders them to be turned on Israel.
America’s 16 Air Assault Brigade will be flown into the war in Chinook and Puma helicopters along with 101 Airborne, known as the Screaming Eagles.
They will secure oilfields and help Kurdish rebels.
The force would then become part of the final three-prong attack on Baghdad.
