In the 18th century French philosopher Denis Diderot said, “Only Passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things”. Describe on of your passions and discuss its contribution to your personal growth.
The Visual Arts are incredible and cannot be described in words. It is my passion, more of a mania even, something irrational and irresistible that keeps me going. Every moment of my life I try to discover something new to me, something that will change my perception of the objects, people around me, will make the stereotypes of certain things change, disappear at least for me.
I have not always been focused on art. In fact it has happened only a few years ago, when I transferred to a school in Germany. Before going to Germany, I was into tennis, but I saw it more as a thing that I had to do, rather than something to be inspired by, give a particular drive to my life. Once I moved away from Moscow to a small island in Germany, where I could not have my tennis trainings any more, I discovered step-by-step new things, new passions for me. I had art lessons only once a week and that always left me in disappointment. I craved for more. I needed to paint, to etch, to sculpt, to create. Any encounter with a book on artists would become a journey into the world of my newly found passion. After one year of “Torture” of having art lessons only once a week, I transferred to an IB school in Oxford, where I immediately took Visual Arts as one of my Higher-level subjects. Finally I was given the opportunity to study something that I have long wanted to do but at the same time I still took all of the other necessary subjects, which helped me to build up my background knowledge, cultural context, what I need to know about to fully understand what art is all about.
Being just a few kilometres away from one of the art centres of the world, London, gave me fantastic opportunities to explore art in all its aspects, which I had not been able to on the island in Germany. Since the beginning of the course countless galleries, art exhibitions, theatres, movie theatres have been visited by me. Throughout all of my visits to those places, I have noticed how my interest in cinema started to grow. I started to watch film by film, looking closely at the camera work, colours, and setting. Mainly it was the colour composition that attracted me so much, but it was also just the idea of the ability of creating a whole world through the camera lens. Cinema for me became like a play that you never get to watch till the end. Once the final phrase is being said, titles are rolling; you never get the chance to look “behind the curtain”. Having developed such a strong interest for film, I have even done an extended essay (4000 words work required for the IB diploma) on the subject of whether product placement in films can be considered as part of the art of the film.
I cannot even imagine now not discovering my passion for art; I would have never opened up a whole new world of cinema, and filmmaking that I so dearly want to be involved with. I would have never be the person that I am right now. My passion turned me into a focused, determined person, with personal interests. Now, knowing what I want achieve I’m ready to set goals and start my way on accomplishing them.
