The war touched almost every family, practically everyone can tell you about his relatives who took part in that war and fought for the defence of their Motherland. And they won the most terrible war of the 20th century.
The historical background of my family is also a vivid example of the tragic, bloody and heroic history of the former USSR. My great-grandfather was an active participant of the Great Patriotic War and World War II. His heroic deeds during the war contributed to the great victory of our people and our army over the fascist Germany on May 9, 1945. After bitter fighting in Berlin, the Soviet troops managed to capture the city and thus put an end to the terrible war. This effort cost the USSR the lives of million of soldiers and civilians. Fortunately, my great-grandfather survived the war and was awarded the highest and the most honorary title of the former USSR – the Hero of the Soviet Union. Our family is proud of him and we keep his war medals and the Gold Star of the Hero as a family heirloom.
While reading about such military leaders of the wartime as Zhukov, Voroshilov and Rokossovsky, I recall my great-grandfather who got to know them personally.
Many monuments in our cities and villages remind us of those great battles and lives that were lost. Just recently due to the 60th anniversary since Our Great Victory the memorial tablet has been put up on the wall of our house, where my great-grandfather lived and where I’m still living.
The whole world pays tribute to heroes and memory of people’s courage and self-sacrifice will be with us forever.
