Really shocking facts about global waste problems and how to fix them 02-07-2022 20:59 к комментариям - к полной версии - понравилось!

The planet is littered with 2.12 trillion tons of waste each year. This amount of waste could travel around the globe 24 times if it were transported in trucks. Waste disposal includes a variety of processes including collection, transportation, dumping and recycling as well as sewage treatment.

What waste gets dumped?

The waste is either dumped on land or in the seas.

  • Construction waste

  • Industrial waste

  • Household waste

  • Plastic waste

  • Electronic waste

  • Radioactive material

  • Sewage

  • Run-offs (fertilizers pesticides and oils from farms) that run into groundwater or rivers can pollute oceans.

It has been accepted as a solution to the world's massive waste problem. If we don't come up quickly with better ideas, it will be out of our control.

This amazing amount of trash is partly due to the fact 99 percent if what we buy is thrown away in 6 months.

Europe produces large amounts of waste.

The amount we waste is closely related to our consumption habits and production practices. Another challenge is the sheer amount of products in the marketplace. Demographic shifts, such as an increase number of single-person homes, can also affect how much waste we create (e.g. packaging goods in smaller units).

It is difficult for anyone to understand the source and location of the waste because of the many types of waste and complicated waste-treatment processes (including illegal ones). There are data available, though of different quality, on all types and types of waste.

What amount of waste are you causing?

The EU Data Centre on Waste compiles European data on waste. According to 2010 data, 29 European countries (i.e. EU-28 and Norway showed that approximately 60% of the waste generated was made up of soil and minerals, primarily from construction and demolition as well as mining. For metal, paper and carton, as well chemical and medical wastes, and animal, vegetal, and vegetal refuses, the percentages varied from 2 % up to 4 %.

Around 10% of Europe's total trash is known to be'municipal.' This is waste that is generated mainly from households, small businesses, and public buildings such schools and hospitals.

In 33 member countries of European Environment Agency, (EEA), 481 kg of municipal solid trash was produced per person in 2012. A slight downward trend is evident since 2007 due partly to the economic crisis which has afflicted Europe since 2008.

Various Waste Disposal Problems

Too much waste is the key problem with waste disposal. America alone generates approximately 220,000,000 tonnes of waste per annum. In 2007, Americans generated almost 260,000,000 tons in municipal solid waste. This amounts to about 2.1 kilograms per individual each day. The point is that these are just figures for America. Let us now imagine how much waste there would be across the globe.

According to the World Bank report on municipal solid refuse (MSW) worldwide, the average per capita global municipal solid trash (MSW), is approximately 1.2 kg. It is predicted that this figure will rise to 1.5kg by 2025. It means that every state and each local authority is faced with the issue of waste disposal. The problem is that our current era is driven to throw-away consumerism by companies and producers who seek maximum profits by producing single-use products without prioritizing reuse, recycle or the use environmental friendly materials.

Effects of waste dumping

There are many consequences to simply dumping waste onto the planet. There are many consequences to waste dumping and inefficient waste management.

  • Pollution in soil: It is possible for soil to contain hazardous chemicals that can then leach into our food.

  • Air pollution: The release of toxic substances from landfills into the atmosphere, including highly poisoning dioxin.

  • Pollution in oceans: Each yearly, 13 million tonnes plastic end up in the oceans. If we continue to dump more plastic into our oceans each year, in 2050 there will still be fish in the ocean.

  • Groundwater Pollution: Nearly 280 billion tons are polluted each year. This is roughly 9000 tons per minute.

Our trash pile-ups have an impact on animal behavior.

The annual United Nations Climate Change Conference was a mainstay of daily news. Reports covered everything, from climate commitment announcements and protestors thronging street corners. One small detail in a New York Times article about the trash crisis that struck the Scottish city due to the talks was the fact that four sanitation workers were sent to the hospital by rats.

Even though it's true, "all cities are rat-friendly," as Susan Aitken from Glasgow said in response. But it doesn't change the fact the increased amount of waste attracts more scavengers.

In some cases, rodents who lived off city food waste are showing "abnormal behaviors" due to COVID-19. New York City became a city of starving rats after many restaurants were closed and their food supplies stopped. Forbes reported on how customers enjoyed a new level interaction with hungry rats seeking food after outdoor dining opened. New Yorkers with 2 million residents are not strangers in rats. NYC is the third-largest US city for rats. Human waste has a history of having an influence on animal behavior.

Movement Ecology found that white Storks in Portugal were changing their migration patterns due the large amount of food scraps in landfills. This was according to a 2016 study. An increase in fishery activity in Argentina may have caused a 37% rise in gull populations. This has resulted a rising number of gull attack on whales. In the last 30 years, the number of gull-attacks on whales has risen from 2% during the 1970s up to 99% by the 2000s.
