10 Plastic Pollution facts that show why we need to do more 02-07-2022 21:01

It is well-known that plastic is harmful to the environment. Policymakers have repeatedly repeated this fact over and over. Although plastic can be a valuable resource in many aspects, plastic pollution cannot be sustainable.

  • Packaging accounts to just over 40% total plastic usage.

  • Each year, more than 500 billion plastic shopping bags are being used around the world. Every minute, around one million bags get used.

  • Plastic bags are designed to last 15 minutes on average.

  • We have produced more plastic over the last ten than all of the century.

  • According to Container Recycling Institute, the U.S. sold 100.7 million plastic beverage bottles in 2014. That's 315 bottles per individual.

  • 57% were plastic water bottle units, with 57.3 million sold in 2014. This is an increase on the 3.8billion plastic water bottles sold back in 1996, the first year that data is available.

  • Producing bottled waters requires approximately 6 times the amount water as it does in the containers.

  • Beverage cans account for 14%. It is much higher when labels and caps are taken into account.

Are you aware just how grave the plastic pollution problem?

Although there have been plastic bans in some cities and countries all over the world, the demand to end single-use plastics remains strong.

Some governments and organisations are trying to reduce plastic use and improve the environment. Certain retailers have also taken responsibility for the environment by committing to reduce the amount of plastic that they produce.

Iceland, a British supermarket chain that sells furniture, has plans to get rid of single-use plastics. Numerous retailers across the country have begun to target plastic straws.

Our plastic consumption has an impact on the environment, and it is up to us to make informed choices. These lesser-known facts about the plastic you really need to know are here.

1. Only 9% can be recycled from plastics

According to the Guardian's report, 8.3 billion tons have been made of plastic since 1950s. This is roughly the same weight as more than 800,000. Eiffel Towers.

Despite the fact plastic is being made every year and its continued production, UNEP says that only 9% is recycled and only 12% are incinerated. The remainder of plastic is found in landfills and dumps.

2. Each minute, 2 million plastic bag are used worldwide

Although it might seem unbelievable, Ecowatch claims that approximately 500 billion to 1 trillion bags are used annually worldwide.

According to New York City Department of Environmental Conservation, New Yorkers annually use 23 million plastic bags each year. That's why it's so important that the city banned plastic grocery shopping bags.

The ban on plastic bags has proven to be extremely successful in countries that have them. In the UK for example, a plastic bag charge of 5p (7c), introduced in 2015 led to an 83% reduction in plastic bags use.

According to a government study, 1.3 billion plastic bag production in Britain continues each year.

3. Some areas of the world are against single-use plastics

2017 was the year Kenya introduced one its most severe laws against plastic bags. Kenyans could be jailed for up to four-years or face a $40,000 fine (PS31,000) if caught making, selling, or using plastic bag.

China, France & Rwanda are among the other countries that have prohibited, partially banned or taxed single usage plastic bags.

This site contains information about other cities or countries that have implemented plastic bans.

4. Each minute of every working day, a truckload of plastics is dumped into our oceans.

According to a World Economic Forum report, 32% (of all plastic packaging) ends up in the ocean every year. This amount is equivalent of dumping one garbage truck worth of plastic every

Really shocking facts about global waste problems and how to fix them 02-07-2022 20:59

The planet is littered with 2.12 trillion tons of waste each year. This amount of waste could travel around the globe 24 times if it were transported in trucks. Waste disposal includes a variety of processes including collection, transportation, dumping and recycling as well as sewage treatment.

What waste gets dumped?

The waste is either dumped on land or in the seas.

  • Construction waste

  • Industrial waste

  • Household waste

  • Plastic waste

  • Electronic waste

  • Radioactive material

  • Sewage

  • Run-offs (fertilizers pesticides and oils from farms) that run into groundwater or rivers can pollute oceans.

It has been accepted as a solution to the world's massive waste problem. If we don't come up quickly with better ideas, it will be out of our control.

This amazing amount of trash is partly due to the fact 99 percent if what we buy is thrown away in 6 months.

Europe produces large amounts of waste.

The amount we waste is closely related to our consumption habits and production practices. Another challenge is the sheer amount of products in the marketplace. Demographic shifts, such as an increase number of single-person homes, can also affect how much waste we create (e.g. packaging goods in smaller units).

It is difficult for anyone to understand the source and location of the waste because of the many types of waste and complicated waste-treatment processes (including illegal ones). There are data available, though of different quality, on all types and types of waste.

What amount of waste are you causing?

The EU Data Centre on Waste compiles European data on waste. According to 2010 data, 29 European countries (i.e. EU-28 and Norway showed that approximately 60% of the waste generated was made up of soil and minerals, primarily from construction and demolition as well as mining. For metal, paper and carton, as well chemical and medical wastes, and animal, vegetal, and vegetal refuses, the percentages varied from 2 % up to 4 %.

Around 10% of Europe's total trash is known to be'municipal.' This is waste that is generated mainly from households, small businesses, and public buildings such schools and hospitals.

In 33 member countries of European Environment Agency, (EEA), 481 kg of municipal solid trash was produced per person in 2012. A slight downward trend is evident since 2007 due partly to the economic crisis which has afflicted Europe since 2008.

Various Waste Disposal Problems

Too much waste is the key problem with waste disposal. America alone generates approximately 220,000,000 tonnes of waste per annum. In 2007, Americans generated almost 260,000,000 tons in municipal solid waste. This amounts to about 2.1 kilograms per individual each day. The point is that these are just figures for America. Let us now imagine how much waste there would be across the globe.

According to the World Bank report on municipal solid refuse (MSW) worldwide, the average per capita global municipal solid trash (MSW), is approximately 1.2 kg. It is predicted that this figure will rise to 1.5kg by 2025. It means that every state and each local authority is faced with the issue of waste disposal. The problem is that our current era is driven to throw-away consumerism by companies and producers who seek maximum profits by producing single-use products without prioritizing reuse, recycle or the use environmental friendly materials.

Effects of waste dumping

There are many consequences to simply dumping waste onto the planet. There are many consequences to waste dumping and inefficient waste management.

  • Pollution in soil: It is possible for soil to contain hazardous chemicals that can then leach into our food.

  • Air pollution: The release of toxic substances from landfills into

What Kitchen Trends are You Missing in 2022? 27-05-2022 00:43

Are you ready for a kitchen renovation? These design trends may be worth reconsidering if you already have a kitchen remodel. These are the kitchen trends that you need to avoid in 2022.

You think you are ready to renovate your kitchen? You're confident you have your design down. Consider rethinking your design if you include any of the following design trends. Even the most well-intentioned trends can go out of style. These are the top kitchen trends to avoid for 2022 and beyond.

The home office will be in high demand this year.

While little work stations in the cooking area were an innovative addition, the work habits of the past year have changed. Many people work remotely, but some work at home.

This means you need a better workspace than the small desk in your kitchen. This year, home offices are in high demand. A small desk in the kitchen will not cut it. Your lunch crowd won't interrupt Zoom meetings and offices will move to quieter, larger places.

Soffits are a boxy structure that is above your kitchen cabinets, where you can hide wiring and pipes.

They stick out from the cabinets and are often awkward. They are functional but designers have recently rethought them and found them to be a waste space and not design-wise.

It's a great time to move wires, pipes and conduits from one location to another when you are remodeling. Install taller cabinets to increase kitchen storage space. You can even mount your cabinets up to the ceiling.

White kitchens look great.

White kitchens will always be available. Many designers worry that too many whites can make the kitchen appear crowded and cheap. This is why they are a kitchen trend to avoid by 2022 - unless you make some changes. . .

There are many ways you can do all-white without getting too much. You can add some color context by using accents or a comparable amount of another color. It doesn't always have to be bright and bold. Even a neutral or metallic color can bring white to a whole new level. You can also add texture to your white kitchen. A white kitchen with texture creates depth and a richer design.

Granite countertops should not be used in your kitchen.

They were the norm in the 90s and 2000s, but today they make kitchens look old. Quartzite, a gorgeous (and expensive) countertop that is sweeping kitchen design, is now the hottest trend.

The vein vs. the grain is the basis for quartzite's popularity. Granite is a grainy stone. Granite is a grained stone.

Veined stones such as marble and quartzite can have strands that run through a solid area. It is best to avoid this speckled look. Any countertop surface with more solid colors or veining is in fashion: concrete, marble, wood, engineered rock, etc.

All that beautiful ornate detail we have loved over the years has been lost.

Trends are shifting towards minimalism and simplicity. Although details can give personality and character, they can also make you look old and heavy.

Plain and simple is a design that can either be dressed up, or used as a standalone piece. You can always add accents to bring out the details that you like. These accents shouldn't be permanent but you can always change them as trends change.

Simple stays relevant longer. This can also be a plus if your goal is to sell your home in the future. Potential buyers will be able to add their own details to a basic kitchen.

The kitchen is, first and foremost, a functional space.

However, 2022 will see a shift towards a more visually simple approach.

Stand mixers, as well as toaster ovens, will soon be moved into the pantry. Microwaves located above the stove will no longer work. The smaller the number of functional items in your kitchen, it is better.

There will be a significant increase in the variety of cabinet doors available for dishwashers as well as refrigerators. Some

3 steps How to Clean Car Windows 26-05-2022 14:51

[696x696]

Driving a car is a difficult task. It's important to consider where you are going, the speed you should drive at, and what other cars are doing.

There's so much going on that you don't want to think about cleaning your car windows when there is still so much else.

It can be tiring to look through the grime and can also be dangerous if you try to clean them while driving. It's not something we recommend!

We can help you clean your car windows without leaving streaks so you don't get in that mess.

What's the best way to clean your car windows?

Newspapers are long considered the best way to clean glass. However, modern water-based inks found in newspapers could leave your windows stained.

Regular cloths and paper towels are not good at cleaning contaminants. They can leave residue and fluff behind, which could mean that you need to clean your car windows again. A microfibre cloth will give your car a shine that won't streak and is the best choice for cleaning.

There are many options for cleaning products. There will be a few glass cleaners around the house, but it is best to buy one that's specifically designed for car glass. Ammonia-based cleaners may cause tinting to your windows. They can also dry out rubber seals.

We've collected the top window cleaners.

Window wipes

Window wipes are a great way to quickly clean up a mess if you don't have much time.

These are not recommended for use in your regular car cleaning or maintenance routine. They're not guaranteed to remove any buildup or clean your windows. They are useful to keep in your car, or for use between washes. Follow up with a quick wipe-over with your microfibre towel if you have the time.

Armor All's glass wipes are our top choice. These wipes are ammonia-free, so they can be used indoors and outside. They also have tint-safe properties.

Glass cleaner

Formulated glass cleaners are best for cleaning your windows because they're made specifically for automotive glass. Spray bottles are the best option, because you can quickly spray the glass with a quick sprayer, except for interior windows.

Our top pick - Autoglym Fast Glass. This highly-rated product claims to remove all insects, dust, grease, oil, and bird droppings quickly from your glass.

DIY cleaner

You don't need to spend a lot of money on cleaning products. There are many homemade cleaners available online, such as rubbing alcohol. You can achieve a professional-quality clean by using only the items you have in your kitchen.

Our top pick is a white vinegar cleaning solution. Combine one part white vinegar and two parts distilled waters. Then, pour into a spray-bottle. You can clean the glass cleaner by following the steps below.

How can you clean your car windows without leaving streaks?

We recommend washing your car with a car wash or washing it in a soapy water solution. This will remove any dirt and bugs that may have accumulated, so your main task is to polish the car glass.

It is best to clean your car's windscreen first. You do this in the same way as your windows. However, since dirt from your windshield is more likely than to get on your windows, it is a good idea to clean your side windows first. Check out this guide on how to clean your car's windscreen.

Exterior Windows

Two microfibre cloths are required for exterior windows. A glass cleaner is also needed.

  1. Spray the cleaning solution on all windows. Your side windows, unlike the windscreen should be small enough so that you don’t have to do it in sections.

  2. For streak-free results, use your microfibre cloth that is lint-free to wipe the area in a

How much do foster carers get paid per child? 25-05-2022 23:10

On January 1, 2009, the foster carer allowance was increased again. Foster carers get a weekly allowance. This payment is to cover the basic needs of the child under their care. The foster care allowance currently stands at EUR325 for children under 12 year olds and EUR352 weekly for children 12 and over. The foster care allowance is paid for the child. It's provided to foster carers to cover all the child’s daily living expenses, such as food, clothing and education costs. The allowance is not intended to be used as a means for social assistance purposes and is exempt from tax.

Tusla has the ability to offer additional financial support to foster carers through either enhanced or additional payments.

Additional payments refers any payment made by a foster carer to exceed the standard rate fostering allowance. Additional payments may be made for children or teenagers who have extra needs beyond what is covered by the standardised Fostering Allowance. Additional payments can only ever be made for children who have additional educational or medical requirements and after authorization has been received by the Tusla Administrator. Additional payment applications must be accompanied by supporting documentation.

If the child has a more long-term financial need for support, foster carers can receive enhanced allowances. If the child is aged between 0-18, the weekly allowance will be doubled. This applies to children with severe special needs who need high-quality supervision and personal care. An enhanced allowance is available to foster carers to help them care for children with additional special needs.

The foster care allowance is meant to be used by the foster parent to meet their daily expenses. Any enhanced allowance must be supported by the assessing professional social worker.

After submitting supporting documentation and a thorough assessment of the child’s needs, the Principal Social Worker must approve the request for enhanced support. An approved request for enhanced supports must include a review of the arrangement for the enhanced allocation.

Foster carers also receive the foster care allowance. However, they are given a variety of targeted support to ensure that they remain a respected and valued part in the alternative care system. A link social worker, support group meetings and training are some of the key elements of this support. Every child in foster care is assigned a social specialist. If they have a care plan for the children, respite care may be possible.

Foster carers must undergo pre-assessment, ongoing training and certification in order for them to provide high quality care. Tusla addresses individual training requirements for relatives who are foster caregivers, taking into account the particular dynamics of these relationships and the personal nature. Tusla also supports the Irish Foster Care Association. It offers a range support services for foster carers, including advocacy and mediation as well as training and advice.

Tusla supports carers by providing foster care allowances when they care for children with significant additional needs.

Tusla informed that they have just held a meeting with foster carers. Foster carers pointed out that the foster-care allowance must be reviewed in light the inflation and rises in social welfare benefits. Tusla has been working on a paper regarding this issue.

Officials in the Department monitor the rate at which the foster care allowance is calculated and, as such, no plans are made to increase it. The Department is undergoing a thorough review of 1991's Child Care Act. This review will include an examination of foster care arrangements.

Why is rent in Dublin so expensive? 25-05-2022 22:39

When you consider move to Dublin or London you try to find out rent in Dublin compare to rent in London. Not surprisingly, Dublin is home to the most expensive areas to rent in the country. Average rent in South County Dublin is EUR2,156 per month, followed by South Dublin City at EUR2,094 per month, Central Dublin at EUR2,016 per month and North Dublin City at EUR1,847 per month. Rents for houses outside Dublin average EUR695, or EUR660 for apartments.

Irish Rents have been rising steadily since 2013, particularly in Dublin.

Here is 10 reasons why:

1. Lack of supply

Stop building homes and eventually you’ll run out of them. We’re building houses at 1970s rates for a population that’s 55 per cent higher than it was in that decade. We’ve plenty of ghost estates – but they were built where they were not needed. Urban Dublin never had much of a problem with ghost estates. In comparison, Co Cork still has 130, and Co Donegal still has 64. No houses means nowhere to buy and nowhere to rent.

2. End of the living-over-the-shop scheme

This was an extraordinarily generous scheme that could have provided more rental accommodation where it was needed and brought new life to moribund town and city centres. Ireland’s urban streets are full of old empty upper floors. The scheme offered 100 per cent tax relief for the cost of converting spaces over shops into apartments. The take-up was abysmal. Buildings’ owners cited onerous regulations, and too few streets were included in the scheme.

Lack of property supply 25-05-2022 22:36

There are many causes, but supply shortage is the most significant because it is now an suppliers market.

Blanchardstown Shopping Centre
Blanchardstown Shopping Centre

Many property developers went bankrupt as a result and some others have not been able to enter the market since. Much of the current construction is now commercial and not residential. Accommodation builders are more interested in Student Complexes than family homes.

The authorities stopped building any social housing. This put pressure on the private sector to rent.

Bedsits were outlawed to eliminate the lower market. A number of factors have led to the abandonment of accommodation over shops.

Dublin named on list of top 50 most beautiful cities 17-10-2020 17:14

Dublin has been named on the list of the top 50 most beautiful cities in the world

The list was put together by FlightNetwork, who deemed Paris the most beautiful city while Dublin almost missed the cut of the top 50.

Ireland's capital came in at 45th on the list; ahead of Marrakesh, Bergen, Jaipur, Beijing and Athens, according to the travel industry's leading 1000 professionals.

Dublin was the only Irish city to make the list and was selected for its rich history, friendly pubs and variety of tours.

Tourism Ireland were confident that Dublin ought to be challenging further up the list but it wasn't to be this year.

Sandra Moffatt from Tourism Ireland commented: "Dublin is a lively capital city that’s as intimate as a village and as friendly as your local Irish pub – cobblestone streets and cathedral steeples, with a stunning coastline surrounded by mountains, Dublin is definitely the world’s most beautiful city!"
