*broom shrub - ракита - a type of shrub which is apparently very common in Russian/Ukranian steppes. Along with the "grey wolf", "black raven" and "dun horse", the broom shrub is a stock component of ancient songs and tales.

**свашка = сваха, a female matchmaker. There was an old tradition that a groom does not propose to the bride personally but sends a matchmaker with gifts. The idea therefore does not carry a negative connotation as it does in English.

***сват is the same thing, only male.
