Electricity
Electricity is one form of energy; it is a movement of electrons. Electricity is the flow of electrons (negative charges) in a conductor, from one atom to another. Pressure (measured in volts) is the force causing the electricity to flow. Electrical pressure is provided by: 1) a generator – this is provided by rotation of a magnetic field about a coil or winding; 2) a battery – an electric pressure is created by the two materials which are situated in a chemical and connected together. Batteries do not supply electricity for high lines; generators are used for this.
Power suppliers (power stations) produce the huge amounts of electricity required in modern living. They use large generators to displace electrons at one point in a circuit of wire. The resulting imbalance of electron pressure between two (or more) wire causes electrons to flow. They will move from the high-pressure wire to the low-pressure wire. This difference in pressure is referred to as voltage. Voltage is electrical pressure. Current (measured in amperes) will flow through a conductor, but a resistance is overcome. Resistance (measured in ohms) is present in all materials. The relationship between pressure, current and resistance is given to us by “Ohm’s law” which states: “The electrical current flowing in a circuit varies directly with the electrical pressure and inversely with the resistance”
For a current to flow, a circuit is essential. There must be a complete line of conduction from the generator, through the appliance and back to the source of pressure.
Electric power is measured in Watts, 746 watts = 1 horsepower. The usual unit of electrical energy is the Kilowatt-hour (Kwt), 1 Kilowtt = 1000 w.
