Respond to the following based on your reading.

With the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 as President came resentment from Southern states, who felt Lincoln represented the formation of an anti-slavery federal government. South Carolina broke away from the United States soon after the election, and several other Southern states followed in the breakaway. While waiting for Lincoln to take office, President James Buchanan refused to take serious action to stop the break-up of the United States. Consider the following questions:

  1. What could Buchanan have done to keep the Union (the United States) together?
  2. Could the fighting over slavery have been peacefully resolved? Why or why not?

1 Buchanan could be more strict in his efforts to keep the union and to enforce the special units maybe to control the situation
2 I do not think the fighting over the slavery could be peacefully resolved as too many actors and factors were in the picture. There were sociological, political, economical and other reasons that had clashed together and they spoke for themselves. The conflict got to the point of no return.

Possible Answers:

  1. Used troops quickly to confront the leaving of South Carolina. Other states may have been persuaded by the example.

Nothing. Short of violence, political compromise was nearly impossible.
  1. Yes—Perhaps given more time and leaders such as those that led Congress through the early mid-1800s political compromise could occur. Economics could force slavery to end on its own in time.

No—The differences were so great that only a war could force the South to end slavery.
