The lessons Canada have learned in Iraq. An interesting Canadian perspective. 14-04-2003 19:58 к комментариям - к полной версии - понравилось!

1. The Pentagon is more trusted than the Canadian, European and Arab (and some of the major US) media. U.S. President George W. Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld never said the war would be easy, but it was. The media said it would be another Vietnam, but it wasn't. In the battle of credibility the U.S. government won.

2. Arab armies are better at oppressing their own people than at fighting wars. Saddam was ineffective at fighting 300,000 allied troops because his army was trained to fight 24 million unarmed Iraqi men, women and children.

3. UN policies towards Iraq are driven by European profiteers. French, German and Russian arms dealers and oil companies -- including TotalFinaElf. Jean Chretien's son-in-law (Canadian Premier’s son) is a major shareholder in TotalFinaElf and had multibillion-dollar contracts with Saddam. Anyone surprised on Canada has no real stance on Iraq?

4. Arab spokesmen don't speak for Arabs. The jubilant welcome of the American troops in Baghdad proved that. Does anyone believe that other Arab dictatorships -- and their apologists in Western universities -- are any more legitimate?

5. The anti-war Left has no shame. This week should have brought a wave of apologies from those who opposed liberation, second-guessed generals, or questioned U.S. motives in the war. Now they oppose, second-guess and question the motives of the reconstruction plan.

6. Anti-Americanism is the official Canadian culture. Chretien and his government oppose U.S. policies but haven't told the Canadian people what their policy would be instead. That's because they have no policy other than to oppose the U.S.

7. English speakers of Canada support the U.S. Chretien (Premier of Canada) is French. Polls in France showed that one-third of French citizens wanted Saddam to win the war. In Canada, Quebec is the only province opposed to the war. Jean Chretien made his choice based on ethnic and cultural tribalism.

8. The Americans have being paying attention all along. Chretien thought that his low, constant drumbeat of anti-Americanism would go unnoticed by an America busy dealing with real problems. The U.S. ambassador showed that his country was listening. And the U.S. is not amused.

9. Canada's military policy is out of date. Canadian army was built for World War III -- the Cold War. But that ended in the 1980s. World War IV -- the global war against terrorism -- requires high technology and high mobility. Canada has neither.

10. Canada's foreign policy is out of date. During the Cold War, America had to take any ally they could find. Like France and Germany, Canada is about to learn that America no longer needs one-way friendships.

11. Israel's foreign policy was ahead of its time. Israel has been fighting WWIV on its own for decades. Had it not taken out the Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981, Saddam would still be in power, and Kuwait would be an Iraqi province.

12. The U.S. is updating its foreign policy. Fair-weather allies are being replaced with eager new partners. Once-tolerated dictatorships, like Saudi Arabia, are no longer being given free passes. As to Canada, the U.S. ambassador has three words: "security trumps trade."

13. Canada hasn't learned yet. Last week, Canada announced that if we captured Saddam, we would not turn him over to the U.S. And Chretien is siding with the French on reconstruction, against the Americans. How can the prime minister-in-waiting get away with not revealing where he stands on the war?
