Giant panda is also known as Hua Xiong (Colorful Panda). It is categorized in the carnivorous item of mammal class. Giant pandas always live in high mountains and thick forest in Shichuan bain and feed on Jian bamboo. They are almost vegetarian but sometimes eat small animals. Giant panda's limbs are strong and flexible. It resists coldness or humidity and could wade across river. Giant pandas are very nearsighted but have excellent sence of bearing. however, they are slow in actions and isolate themselves from others. They like wandering and have the habit of sticking to their land.

It is recorded in Shang Book, one of the ancient books, that giant panda was as powerful as tiger. judging from those records, people always regard giant panda as marvelous animal and as the symbol of interpidity, justice and peace.

Conclusion of studies shows that from about 2 million years ago, the early of Pleistocene Era to one million years ago, giant pandas widely spread over the south of China and formed prosperous giant panda - Jian Chi Xiang animal group. So far, most of the species of this animal group are extinct. whereas giant panda is remanied and continues to exist with the development of long history. That implies the great vitality that giant panda has. Therefore, it is also titled as Live Fossil, which is valuable in terms of historic material and scientific research.

At present there are probably 1000 giant pandas left in the wild field and the number is still decreasing. From prosperity to decline during several million years, the decreasing number of giant pandas implies complicated reasons. its specialty in food, propagation ability and breast=-feeding are considered as inner factors, while the disturbance to its living environment, isolated conditions, poaching or illegal killing by human beings, disease etc. are external factors. To offset this situation and to preserve the rare giant pandas, beside the Wang Lang nature preserve area founded in 1963, the Chinese government has set aside over 28 nature preserve areas, such as Wo Long in Sichuan Province, Bai Shui in Gansu Province, Fo Ping in Shanxi Province. The giant panda as an envoy of peace and friendship has been sent to many foreign countries, which has raised much fervor in the west.
