I spent a wonderful holiday on the Crimean Black sea. I was there 4 weeks and I rested in the city with breathtaking views called
Balaclava. Now, some words about its history. To start I should say that the history of small and ancient
Balaclava is filled with remarkable legends. There is an assumption that in tenth Song of Balaclava bay as the
bay of
Lestrigon. And now let’s turn from legends to reality.
Balaclava, that ancient name sounds like “Balic – uve”, which means “the fish bag”, was formed by Greeks in 422-421 ages of our era. But before Greeks nation called “tavres” lived in
Balaclava. It’s not known for how much time tavres lived there but archeologically its proved, that they lived on the South coast of
Crimea from the beginning of the 1st millennium before our era. So, it could be assumed that
Balaclava is 3 thousand years old. And it turns out that this small city is the most ancient in the hole Crimean coast. At the end of the XIX and the beginning of XX centuries
Balaclava was known in as the favorite place where Russian aristocracy rested. Paustovsky, Bunin, Kuprin – all of them loved
Balaclava! In the time of the “cold war” there was a place of the repairing of Russian submarines. This place which has been constructed almost half-century ago under personal control of Hryshev is opened for visitors at a first time! The factory is a gloomy place. Today you can walk around the empty rooms and repair shops of a factory and see channels where military submarines once came. Now
Balaclava is an opened city where people like to arrive to rest in summer. It has no bustling streets and it is not a cultural melting – pot because it is not a big city but the plus of
Balaclava is in its delicious food. So if you are a gourmet of fish you are welcome!
Balaclava has many spectacular historic buildings with elegant architecture. What else could be said? It’s an ideal place for adventure sports as diving or mountain climbing. In the romantic atmosphere of the lively nightlife of
Balaclava the sea seams very mystic, the unspoilt forests on the mountain slopes seam like huge giants. So if you like wide open spaces,
Balaclava with its interesting flora and fauna is just a place for you!
