PHILIP ANSELMO: If DOWN Was To Take Over PANTERA, I'd Say It Was Damn Worth It - Mar. 9, 2002
During a recent interview with Britain's Kerrang! magazine, PANTERA/DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo once again commented on the possibility of DOWN “overtaking” his main band, thus causing a shift in the singer's priorities. In the issue dated March 9th, 2002 featuring Anselmo on the cover, Philip states the following:

“I don't wanna make anybody mad that I've ever played music with before because I have nothing but respect for them, but this particular DOWN record was one of the most fulfilling things I've ever done in my life, man.

“You have to admit that when I'm in PANTERA, I have to take on a f.cking role, y'know? I have to be very aggressive. And it's a part of me, but I'm not 22 anymore. I'm not in bar rooms fighting or doing any of that sh.t. DOWN is about songs and what the songs sound like. It's not about how much you can get up on stage and jump around. There ain't nobody playing this kinda sh.t right now and I'm freaking out on it unlike I've ever freaked on any other f.cking record. I can't listen to it enough without it trapping me.

“We'll take things one step at a time. But if this was to take over the other bands, f.ck, I'd say it was damn worth it.”

PANTERA's PHILIP ANSELMO Denies Break-Up Rumors - Feb. 20, 2002
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ANSELMO DENIES BREAK-UP RUMORS

Philip Anselmo issued an unequivocal "F*ck no" to the recent rumors that PANTERA are breaking up. It seemed the rumors kicked up during a press junket for Anselmo and fellow PANTERA bandmember Rex Brown's side project, the band DOWN. "Side projects always start rumors," stated a spokesperson for PANTERA's management. "It's the nature of the beast." Add Anselmo to the mix and writers get a little itchy. "What can I say," says Anselmo. "I love PANTERA. I'm excited about DOWN. I'm lucky to be in a place where I can make great f*cking music with both bands. We're going into the studio sometime later this year to record the new PANTERA album. End of story."

PANTERA's ANSELMO: "Enough Is Enough" - Feb. 16, 2002
PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo has sensationally hinted to the Dutch Aardschok magazine that he may quit the Texas metal act before another studio album is recorded. In the March 2002 issue of the publication, Anselmo states that “PANTERA was my home for many, many years. I don't have a problem with anyone in the band. PANTERA gave me a lot, and I wouldn't be the same person without them. But I think we lost a piece of what we once stood for. Reinventing [The Steel] was a step in the right direction, but it's just not like it used to be anymore. There is a time [when] you have to say: enough is enough. I don't want to be a heavy metal grandpa. I'm 33 and have broken all the bones in my body serving PANTERA. But I'm not 22 anymore. I just don't get the feeling I used to singing 'Cowboys From Hell' or 'Walk'. No one knows what the future holds, but our last tour was with SLAYER, and I don't think there could be a better-ending tour. I don't want to go on and on like JUDAS PRIEST or SABBATH. I prefer [the] SOUNDGARDEN [approach], who called it a day at the peak of their fame.” When pressed to be more specific about what this meant with respect to PANTERA's future, Phil responded simply that “it means what it means, and we shall see...” [translated from Dutch by Frank Iking]

Chasing their metal muse has left the members of Chimaira broke, sick, crazy… and more determined than ever to achieve greatness or die trying.

“Xanax, Lexapro—I’ll endorse them all fucking day,” says Chimaira’s Mark Hunter. The vocalist is having dinner, along with Matt DeVries (guitar) and Chris Spicuzza (keyboards/samples), in a crowded NYC restaurant around the corner from the club where his group will headline in a few hours. His bandmates both order drinks, but Hunter abstains; he has given up alcohol because of all the medication he’s on. “It’s the only reason I can sit here and have a normal conversation with you right now,” Hunter says. “A few months ago, before I started taking the drugs, I’d get seriously freaked out just going into a restaurant or hanging out in a large group of people.

Hunter believes his social-anxiety disorder is due, in large part, to being in the band. The condition began a few years ago with simple stage fright. “I started throwing up before I’d go on, and I couldn’t figure out why. I just got nervous. And then the way I felt before getting onstage started happening when I just wanted to go out somewhere.” The singer shakes his head. “I think touring got to me because I’m constantly surrounded by people—and it makes me sick.”

The frontman of a metal band, who must goad throngs of headbangers into an animalistic frenzy on a nightly basis, is not supposed to be a social cripple who can barely face a crowd. But then Chimaira (rounded out by guitarist Rob Arnold, bassist Jim LaMarca, and drummer Kevin Talley) are not a lot of the things that conventional wisdom would dictate. If hedonistic groups like Motörhead and Mötley Crüe set the standard for a metal band’s offstage conduct, then Chimaira should be on their bus snorting coke off of groupies’ breasts; instead, they’re watching Seinfeld and going to bed by 11 P.M. If the expectations of most naive, unsigned metal bands (including Chimaira themselves at one time) held true, then the group, having signed to Roadrunner Records, should be rolling in cash; instead, band members are constantly on the road trying to build a fanbase and making less doing so than when they delivered pizza for a living. And if rock critics and elitist metalheads are to be believed, then Chimaira are a mediocre nu-metal band—one with a DJ, no less; instead, with their self-titled third album, they’ve created an ambitious and mature true metal record so aggressively noncommercial (there’s not one song on it that’s less than five minutes long) that it has provoked fights with their label. It’s a grueling set of circumstances, and several Chimaira members have dropped out because of them. Hunter, meanwhile, is popping pills just to hang on.

Formed in 1998, Chimaira could have been a nu-metal band. The Cleveland-based sextet was influenced by the likes of Korn and Deftones in the beginning, Hunter admits, and echoes of such trendsetting nu-metal groups can be heard on Chimaira’s 2001 debut, Pass Out of Existence, alongside elements of more extreme metallists like Meshuggah and Slayer. It’s an album that some of the band members seem to wish would pass out of existence itself.

“For me, that record was almost a collection of demos that we were forced to record,” says Spicuzza. “At that point in our career, we spent most of our time wondering if we were gonna get signed, rather than writing and practicing. Then we got signed to Roadrunner, and they were like, ‘OK, go record!’ and we never got a chance to write new songs.”

Unfortunately, a band gets only one shot at making a first impression, and Existence’s cobbled-together sound and Adidas-rock histrionics made it all too easy to pigeonhole Chimaira as just another Korn wannabe. Not only did Existence fall short creatively, it also didn’t move nearly as many units as Roadrunner had hoped, and so Chimaira were under the gun when making their 2003 follow-up and what would prove to be their watershed album, Impossibility of Reason. Rejecting the overly polished production of their debut, the band returned home to record with their friend Ben Schigel in his garage studio (where Chimaira also recorded their latest). They went back to their roots musically as well, writing a barrage of Pantera-esque mosh-metal anthems, but it would be the two most atypical new tracks that had the biggest impact on the band’s current direction: “Stays the Same” (a rock ballad that didn’t make the album) and “Implements of Destruction,” the 13-and-a-half-minute instrumental that closes Impossibility.

“Roadrunner asked us to do a radio song, so we wrote ‘Stays the Same,’”

PHILIP ANSELMO: 'I Would Have Taken A Bullet' For DIMEBAG - Nov. 29, 2005
Former PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo has spoken exclusively to Revolver magazine (web site) about the death of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Anselmo's much-rumored substance-abuse problems and the role the heavy metal media has played in PANTERA's eventual demise, among many other topics. Several excerpts from the article in the magazine's February 2006 issue (which is due to hit newsstands on December 6) follow:

Revolver: Tell me about the past year.

Anselmo: "Man, this has been the worst year of my life — it's been the worst year of many people's lives. Ever since… Ever since my guitar player was taken from me, basically."

Revolver: How much do you miss Dime?

Anselmo: "I miss him more than I can even begin to say. I think of him every single waking day — every 30 minutes, if not every five minutes.

"And… [he pauses] Trying not to get choked up here. I'm trying to compose myself. I speak with Rex [Brown, PANTERA's bass player] often. We both are dealing with it… I'm in therapy. I never had to see a psychiatrist before. I see one regularly now. They tried to put me on antidepressants, but I won't take them because I don't trust drugs at all anymore. I don't trust a fucking pill, not unless it's a vitamin.

"I feel so goddamn bad for Vince [Paul, PANTERA's drummer and Darrell's brother], because during the writing of our last record, [his and Darrell's] mother passed away… I miss Vince. I miss his sense of humor. And Dime — there was no more creative, beautiful, perfect motherfucker ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. He could make something out of nothing — if we were in Bumfuck, Anywhere, he could find some kind of something to do that would end up being fun, you know? And not to mention his music, our music. Dimebag, Vinnie, Rex — they were the greatest, and still are the greatest, musicians I've ever played with. I will always love everybody in that band, man. We had so much chemistry together. I miss it so goddamn much. You know, it took me quite awhile, but after about six months, I watched some old videos, I listened to our records, and I was just stunned, amazed, gasping for air, because I knew that I was part of something that changed heavy metal forever. And it took all four of us.

"To lose someone like Dime, and to have his brother in such pain, it kills me. I'd give one of my fingers to fix everything somehow, go back in time, or to have been there. This is a harsh thing to say, but if I saw some stupid son of a bitch coming at my guitar player with a gun, I would have knocked his block off, you know? I would have taken a bullet for that motherfucker."

Revolver: Have you tried to contact Vince?

Anselmo: "Yes, right afterwards, and I don't blame him for his isolation. I mean, it's a stunning, stunning thing. It's nothing you can just put out of your mind, it's nothing you can drink away, it's nothing you can go to a psychiatrist for a couple of months and he can put everything into perspective. I fear the worst for him, because I love him so much, you know? All I have in my heart is love, and when I say this, there's no way I can leave the fans out.

"We, PANTERA, had the greatest, the most intense, dedicated fans I've ever seen in my goddamn life. And I really hope with all my heart that one day, people — especially our fans and my friends — can see clearly enough to think for themselves and really realize that I have nothing but love for them. I've just been

KORN Frontman: 'Christians Are The Biggest Con Artists In The World' - Nov. 27, 2005
KORN frontman Jonathan Davis has hit back at departed guitarist Brian "Head" Welch over his assertions that the only thing the members of the band care about is money.

"All they care about is money? What the fuck?! I don't understand what he's on about," Davis tells the Swedish magazine Close-Up. "All HE cared about was money and all he does is still care about the money. He's got his solo career, he's going and doing all this, but oh, it's not for the money. Christians are the biggest fucking con artists in the world and he's still gonna make money off that. I don't understand… The only true way he can do that is to become a fucking monk! There you go, that's a sacrifice for God. Give up everything and go, if that's what you want. It's bullshit. If he wants to go save kids in India, that's amazing. That's a noble fucking cause, that's cool. Do your thing. The only problem I do have with him is that he’s got this Jesus complex. You can tell by the way he's got his fucking hair, Messiah down his neck, him with the kids in India trying to be holier than thou now, that he thinks he's Christ. It's kinda crazy, kinda cuckoo and it kinda weirds me out."

Were you surprised that he turned all religious?

"Yeah. I just said what was on my mind: 'What the fuck are you doing?' 'Dude, don't talk to me, talk to God. God is the one telling me to do this.' I'm like, 'Okay… Well, God told me you're crazy!' [laughs] You can't argue with religion, no one wins. I just let him do his thing. If that's what he wants, do it, dude. No hard feelings. If he came up to me again I'd give him a hug and say, 'How are you doing?’ But it's just not possible, because every time I've tried to have conversations with him, it just goes to God. I don't wanna talk about religion, it's not my thing. He can't respect that so…"

Do you view him as a Judas?

"I guess in a way, yeah. I don't think he betrayed us… I think he was unhappy for a long time, and honestly if this has kept him alive that's a good thing."

Former PANTERA Drummer Launches BIG VIN RECORDS - Nov. 26, 2005
Former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott has launched Big Vin Records, a new Dallas-based record label with distribution via Fontana.

Vinnie was a founding member, producer, and one of the masterminds behind the success of PANTERA, the seminal '90s Grammy-nominated metal band whose worldwide album sales total 13.5 million. After the breakup of PANTERA, Paul and his brother, guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, formed DAMAGEPLAN, whose debut album ("New Found Power") was released by Elektra in early 2004.

Big Vin Records' first release will be an album from REBEL MEETS REBEL, a unique crossover of country, metal and rock. It features three of the founding members of PANTERA (Vinnie Paul, Dimebag and bassist Rex Brown) together with legendary country singer/outlaw David Allan Coe. REBEL MEETS REBEL's CD was recorded over a four-year period and is set to contain a total of 12 tracks, including "Nothin' To Lose", "Rebel Meets Rebel", "Cowboys", "Panfillo", "Heartworn Highway", "One Night Stand", "Arizona Rivers", "A Man With Nothin' Ain't Got Nothin' to Lose", "New York City Streets" and "Get Outta My Life".

The title track, "Rebel Meets Rebel", was previously said to be a duet with PANTERA singer Philip Anselmo, although it is not presently clear if Anselmo's contributions will make it to the final product.

"Being from Texas, not only do we have rock roots, but we listen to country and blues," Paul explained to MTV News in early 2000. "Before our shows, we'd play 'Jack Daniels, If You Please' off of one of [Coe's] CDs.... He caught wind of it, and we went out to see him when he played Billy Bob's. He was just a super cool dude. It was fun to check him out, and we hooked him up with a couple of our home videos, and he called us back a couple days later and just said, 'Man, these f***ing videos are incredible. I really dig what you guys do.' He knows more about PANTERA than I do now."

"Rebel Meets Rebel" is scheduled for release in March 2006.

The second project to be released via Big Vin will be a DVD, "Dimevision", as a tribute to Dimebag, one of metal's all-time guitar greats who is credited by some for creating the original concept which eventually became the MTV hit series "Jackass". "Dimevision" features Dime's stellar guitar playing and offbeat brand of humor, and is sure to be a title every serious PANTERA fan will have to own.

PANTERA's career overview CD, "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits!", has sold 452,000 in the United States since its September 2003 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The 16-song "Vulgar Hits!" CD was packaged with a bonus DVD boasting 12 videos, including two live performances. The bulk of the material was culled from the band's six major-label releases, but also included are non-album cuts "Cat Scratch Fever" (a cover of the TED NUGENT song that originally appeared on the Polygram soundtrack to "Detroit Rock City") and the BLACK SABBATH cover "Hole in the Sky", previously available only on import.
