[показать] CFP: Masculinities in the Long Middle Ages (grad) (2/1/06; 3/17/06) MASCULINITIES IN THE LONG MIDDLE AGES An Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center
March 17, 2006
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: We are very pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be Jeffrey Jerome Cohen (George Washington University).

From peasants to kings and from knights to merchants, ideas about masculinity were varied and complex during the medieval era. For this one-day conference, we invite papers from all academic disciplines that probe questions surrounding male-ness and masculinities from late antiquity through the early modern period.
"Masculinities in the Long Middle Ages" is an interdisciplinary conference organized by the Medieval Studies Certificate Program and the CUNY-Medievalists Pearl Kibre Library at the CUNY Graduate Center. This conference seeks to bring into conversation various theories and viewpoints about the ways masculinities were constructed, as well as the ways in which various constructions of masculinity intersected with ideas of class, race, and religion.

Topics may include but are not limited to:
* mysticism and masculinity
* religious and monastic masculinity
* female masculinity
* performative masculinity
* knighthood
* queer readings
* homosociality
* literary masculinity
* hagiography
* heroic masculinity
* chivalry
* gendered violence
* racialized masculinity
* patristic masculinity
* artisanal masculinity

Please submit abstracts of 250 words with "Medieval Masculinities" in the subject line to medievalmasculinities@gmail.com by Feb. 1, 2006.

Sexualities: Special Edition
The Cultural Study of Commercial Sex

Given the proliferation of forms of commercial sex, the scarcity of research –except on ‘prostitution’ – is remarkable. The focus is usually on personal
motivations, the morality of the buying-and-selling relationship, stigma, violence and disease prevention. Questions of desire and love are usually
sidelined; relationships are rarely contextualized culturally or conceived as complex; concrete sexual issues are hardly dealt with. Commercial sex is
usually disqualified from cultural research and treated only as a moral issue.

BITCH, WITCH, WHORE: REPRESENTATIONS OF WOMEN IN WORD AND IMAGE
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: JOANNE HOLLOWS (NOTTINGHAM TRENT)
An Inter-disciplinary Postgraduate Conference
University of Newcastle, 26 May 2006

Both historic and contemporary representations of women in word and image
are understood, all too often, through the madonna/whore dichotomy: from
the delicate Victorian waif to the red-lipsticked vamp of fifties film noir; from Molly Bloom to Buffy. This conference will consider iconic representations and enduring archetypes of women, addressing their persistent appeal and exposing their limitations. What makes certain versions of femininity archetypal? Can they be subverted, challenged, and/or reclaimed?

Crossroads in Cultural Studies
Istanbul 2006

Open session: Gender and the Media

In ‘More! New Sexualities in Girls’ and Women’s Magazines’ (1999), McRobbie alludes to three phases in feminist critique of magazines.
First, content reducing women to a passive category was rejected. Second,
Althusserian theory emphasised the role of ideology in the exercise of power. Thirdly, post-structuralism pointed to subjectivity as a site of knowledge and power. Because subjectivity is constituted as an on-going process, discursive formations compete with each other for regulation of socially desirable forms of individuality. Contemporary representations of gender in the media repeat similar narratives so as to establish the limits for the mapping of subjectivity: by defining alterity, these representations confirm identity as natural.
This session invites papers on gender and the media, dealing with:
· Gender and Methodology
· Performative Languages of Gender
· Gender and Ideology
· Gender and its Others
· Liberal and Radical Feminism
· Public/Private Debates
· Gender and Staging Media Events

Paper proposals consising in a maximum of 150 words to be submitted by
