Amy Froide, University of Maryland-Baltimore County "The Spinster and
the Old Maid: Representations of Never-Married Women in Early Modern
England"
Katherine Holden, University of the West of England "The shadow of marriage: defining the single in twentieth century Britain"
The links between gender and marital status have been insufficiently explored or theorised within women's history. This conference will bring new perspectives to a neglected area of research by examining the lives of single women during the last millennium in any period and any country.
Speakers may focus on different categories of female singleness including spinsters, lone mothers, widows and divorcees and discuss single women's
involvement in areas such as health and welfare, politics, work, religion, culture, family, friendships, partnerships and networks.
Papers that offer new conceptual or theoretical approaches to singleness or compare the experience of single women and single men are also welcome.
All papers must have some historical content.

Women and War in 20th Century Literature

This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be held at (dis)junctions, the University of California
Riverside’s 13th
Annual Humanities Graduate Conference on April 7-8,
2006.

Contributors are invited to submit critical works portraying women in war narratives. These papers can examine works both by women or in which women are included. Any theory or critical approach is welcomed, as are interdisciplinary works.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
Women addressing the cultural changes concomitant with a war environment
Women on the home front
Sexuality in war narratives
Feminism and war
War propaganda
Woman as witness to war
Longing/loss/desire
Forgetting and denial/controversies of memory
Mothers in a war environment
Representations of women in war movies
Gender roles/ gender blurring within war narratives

GENDERFUL EXPERIENCES

Experience is defined as a - direct participation or observation of
events - which results in a production of knowledge. This experience
can be encountered by an individual, community or nation.

In this regard, postgraduate students Vasuki Shanmuganathan and Claire
Harnett-Mann from Interdisciplinary Gender Studies at the University of
Birmingham are organising, 25 - 26 May 2006 in the Learning Centre UG05, a conference for postgraduate students of humanities and social sciences on issues relating to the study of gender. Titled -Genderful Experiences,- in reference to the interacting dynamics of identity and experience, we invite submissions of theoretical and practical applications that consider our positions as multiply producible subjects. We are especially interested in proposals whose scope is transnational and/or transgendered and those that consider gender in relation to the importance of interdisciplinary study.

Individual papers or panel groups are welcome. Final papers must be 20 minutes

I am seeking papers that address Ecofeminism and Literature for a book proposal I am currently working on, which is pending publication with Cambridge Scholars Press. Papers will be considered for this collection.
Possible topics can address Ecofeminism and:
-race
-class
-gender
-third world countries
-environmental destruction
-sexism
-heterosexism
-colonialism
-militarism
Other topics are welcome, the only requirement is that the submission must
address a topic as seen in literature. Contemporary pieces of literature are especially encouraged. Submissions should be 10-20 pages in length, and
include a brief author CV and contact information.

Дочитал вчера книгу диакона Андрея Кураева “«Мастер и Маргарита»: За Христа или против”. Не то чтобы в книге не с чем было поспорить, но рецензия Кураева на булгаковский роман в целом показалось мне интересной, не смотря на то, что далеко не со всем я согласен с диаконом. Самым, наверное, интересным показалось мне сложившееся у меня впечатление, что Кураев рассуждает о сюжете и персонажах романа так будто бы это не от начала до конца плод фантазии автора, а реальная история, некогда произошедшая с реальными живыми людьми. Такое впечатление, на мой взгляд, лишний раз подтверждает мастерство Булгакова как писателя. Про «Мастера и Маргариту» просто не возможно говорить иначе. Булгакову действительно удалось создать свой мир, живущий по своим законам, персонажей живущих своей жизнью, не всегда подчиняющихся воле создавшего их автора. Независимость произведения от его создателя, является, собственно, и одной из основных тем обсуждаемого булгаковского романа. Я (так же, кстати, как и Кураев) считаю, что история изображенная Мастером на страницах его романа о Пилате, существует исключительно в воображении писателя. Под писателем я имею в виду именно мастера, а не Булгакова. На лицо рекурсия – как сам мастер плод воображения Булгакова, так и главные герои романа о Понтии Пилате, в том виде в каком они изображены в одноименном романе – плод воображения Мастера (и от части, может быть, плод бесовского наваждения). Принимая во внимание сказанное, символичным кажется тот факт, что в конце «Мастера и Маргариты» вместе с реально существующим в рамках романа Сатаной судьбу Мастера решают и им же самим созданные химеры. Левий Матвей, например, явно пришел к Воланду не из царства света, а со страниц рукописи Мастера. В этом нет собственно, ничего странного. «Кто больше оказывает влияние: автор на своих героев или сами эти герои на своего создателя?» – это очень сложный вопрос, на который, пожалуй, не возможно однозначно ответить. Об этом вам скажет любой писатель. Если (по мнению некоторых критиков, писатель) Сорокин и говорит о том, что созданные им образы – это всего лишь только буквы на бумаге, то это только подтверждает его же Сорокина тезис о том, что сам он себя писателем не считает.

[показать] Call for Papers - Sexualities: Special Edition The Cultural Study of Commercial Sex Given the proliferation of forms of commercial sex, the scarcity of research - except on 'prostitution' - is remarkable. The focus is usually on personal motivations, the morality of the buying-and-selling relationship, stigma, violence and disease prevention. Questions of desire and love are usually sidelined; relationships are rarely contextualized culturally or conceived as complex; concrete sexual issues are hardly dealt with. Commercial sex is usually disqualified from cultural research and treated only as a moral issue. A new field of the cultural study of commercial sex would refer to all commercial goods and services with an erotic or sexual element - a rich field of human activities, every one operating in complex socio-cultural contexts where the meaning of
buying and selling sex is not always the same.
