Music career

Elva was originally signed to Virgin Records Taiwan, a sub-label of EMI, which created the stage name ??? for her. Her self-titled debut album in 1999 sold over 1 million copies in Asia and cemented her status in the Chinese music industry. [1]

Elva Hsiao sang the song "U Make Me Wanna", which appeared on her album Love's Theme Song, Kiss (2002), with British boy band Blue. Virgin Records and Elva parted ways in summer of 2004.

For a year, Elva rested as record companies fought over her next contract. It ended up becoming a battle between Warner Music Taiwan and Sony BMG, with Warner Music winning the battle in the end. Elva signed into Warner Music on March 23rd, 2005, making her Warner Taiwan's "fifth diva" (after Sammi Cheng, A-Mei Chang, Na Ying, and Stefanie Sun).[2] Fans were overjoyed at this, and waited for the coming of a new album, which Warner had promised would be released in June 2005.

However, Warner Music Taiwan faced some serious issues during this time, including executives resigning and a change of staff members. Many other Warner artists (including Stefanie Sun, Machi, A-Mei, and F.I.R.) were affected and did not see much promotion. However, none faced as much trouble as Elva, whose album was delayed until September, then October, then November, December, until Warner announced that the album would be delayed indefinitely. This angered the fans, who had been waiting patiently. Their protests spammed the forums of Warner Music Taiwan, causing the entire website to be out of service for a week.

In February 2006, however, a Warner representative promised in an interview that the album would be released around late March/early April. It was only a few weeks later that magazine articles reported another change of staff members and the possibilities of the album being delayed into late April/early May.

In June 2006, she released a new single, entitled "The World I Want" [?????].

In October 2006, the delayed album still had not been released, although Elva announced that it would be released in December. At that time she was in Los Angeles working on dance choreography. In addition, she released another new promotion single entitled "Elva Is Back", a fast catchy song featuring electro beats and raps. A dance song “Confession”(??)win top10.

Elva and Warner Music announced in November that her newest album would be released on 22 December. The album is entitled [1087], signifying the number of days Elva had been absent from the Mandopop scene.

She released the music video for her single called "Confession" in mid-2007. Her second single is called "L.o.V.E". Her third single is called "Not Far Away". Her fourth single is called "The Ambassador. Her fifth single is called "Honey Honey Honey". Her sixth single is called "My Boyfriend".

[edit]
Back to EMI

After the contact with Warner Music, Elva decided to switch back to EMI Virgin Records in 2008. She described the switch as "going back home" as she was among the first few artists signed by Virgin Music Chinese in 1999 when the division was first established.[3] Some critics also commented Elva was avoiding the back of Warner's original General Manager Sam Chen who has a bad name in Chinese music industry in controlling and creating fake stats for his artists. The rumored contract cost EMI over NT$250 million which is over HKD 60 million or about USD 8 million. Johanna Wang, President of EMI Music Taiwan commented that the action of signing Elva was proving they (EMI) are not going to quit the Chinese music scene. Instead, they would create a new entertainment empire spanning over film productions, artist management, concert production, publishing and both digital and traditional music industries.

Elva's first album back with EMI,????, was originally set to be released in late May 2008. But due to the delay in production and of China's approval due to the Olympic Games[citation needed] , the album was Читать далее...

Early life

Though Tsai was introverted and shy as a child, her mother realized early on that she had great academic potential, so she enrolled her in Japanese-style math lessons, which she completed ahead of schedule. During primary school, she consistently scored 100 points and ranked among the top three of her class.[1] There was only one time that she failed to rank in the top three of her class and was placed tenth.[2] Eventually, her academic abilities enabled her to enroll at Jingmei Girls' High School and later, Fu Jen Catholic University.[3]

Tsai devoted her youth to studying English, self-studying English in her primary school years. She eventually majored in English Literature at Fu Jen Catholic University, a Taiwanese university popular for its English flavor. Fu Jen Catholic University is regarded for its English Language program and its English Literature program and a number of Taiwanese entertainers are alumni of these programs.

During her childhood years, Tsai developed an interest in singing and experimented with different vocal techniques after listening to the songs of popular female singers such as Teresa Teng and Faye Wong.

1998-2001: Universal Music

Tsai first started out by taking part in an MTV singing competition at the age of 18. She won the top prize at the competition with her rendition of Whitney Houston's #1 hit "Greatest Love of All". She was then signed by Universal Music.

On July 1999, her first single "Living With the World" (??????) was released. It was sold in convenience stores and was a tremendous success,[4] which led to the release of her first album, Jolin 1019, on September 1999. At that time, she was packaged as "The Girl Next Door," and was an instant hit with teenagers, earning her the title "Teenage Boy Killer". Jolin 1019 ended up selling more than 400,000 copies in Asia. With the success of her first album, she released her anticipated second album in May 2000, Don't Stop. Many of the hits from that album were well known throughout Asia and the album was also a tremendous success.[citation needed] She also released her first photobook with pictures mainly taken in Hawaii.

Tsai's image changed for her third album, Show Your Love. Nearing the age of 21, she released an album that was much more mature and soothing. However, the album did not sell as well as her last two albums. Her fourth album, Lucky Number, was not able to bring her back to the same level of popularity either. The following year, due to conflicts with her record company, Tsai did not release any albums. She did, however, release her second photo book, with photos taken in Thailand. At the end of 2001, Tsai's contract with Universal Music ended and her first greatest hits compilation, Together was released.

[edit]
2002-2006: Sony BMG

Tsai signed with Sony Music that year and got the biggest break of her whole career. The first single released was the track "Spirit Of The Knight" (????), which became a big hit and led to the highly anticipated release of her album Magic (??72?). The album turned out to be a smashing success, topping the Taiwan album charts for three full months and selling more than 300,000 copies in Taiwan alone. The album has sold over a million copies in Asia.[5] The album boasted many of her most well-known singles, including the hit dance song that brought Tsai back to the top of the charts "See My 72 Changes" (??72?) and the extremely popular "Say Love You" (???). The latter song and several others, including the hit "Prague Square" (?????) were penned by fellow Taiwan mega star Jay Chou (???). The new image she presented for this album was more playful and sexy than before and her music became more dance-oriented. This transformation gave her what she needed to make a comeback to the music scene after being gone for almost a year.

Tsai's sixth album, Castle (??),Lol was just as popular lol lol olololol as its predecessor and became a top album in many Asian countries.[citation needed] Just as with Magic, many songs on this album were written by Chou, her rumored boyfriend at that time. Two of these songs, the cute and playful "It's Love" (???) and the moving rock ballad "Rewind" (??), became two of Tsai's biggest hits. Prior to the album's release, she showcased her single "Pirates" (??), another song composed by Chou, at a mini-concert. She subsequently filmed one of the most expensive music videos in Taiwanese history for Читать далее...

Body Control».
