Siachen Base Camp, Nov 6 (IANS) "Guts are the pre-requisite to fly here". A plaque at the Indian Air Force's (IAF) 114 Cheetah Helicopter Unit aptly summarizes the harsh environment that the aviators have to face while operating on the Siachen Glacier, once known as the highest battlefield in the world at 22,000 ft.

For IAF pilots, landing on some of the world's highest helipads like Sonam (20,000 feet) and Amar (20,114 feet) is a daily affair. Army pilots also push their helicopters beyond their performance limits to maintain the supply to the forward posts located at the frozen frontier.

Chandigarh, Nov 6 (IANS) Democrat Barack Obama's election as the first African American president of the US has ignited hope among Americans of Indian origin who dream of either pursuing political careers or having members of the diaspora represent them in the political arena.


"The election of Obama is encouragement for any American Indian. It shows us that anything is possible. I hope it motivates American Indians to run for elected offices. In fact, it has encouraged me to think of running again," American entrepreneur of Indian origin Chiranjeev Singh Kathuria told IANS on telephone from Chicago.

London, Nov 5 (IANS) Victoria and David Beckham have given each other 'magic' necklaces as a sign of love -- and for each other's protection.

According to thesun.co.uk, the couple exchanged the gold and silver Japanese necklaces that feature an angel. The 34-year-old Victoria said: "The energy they emit is incredibly powerful. These pieces act as talismans of love, healing and protection."

New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS) From advertising in video games and specialised iPhone applets to extensive on-line supporter networks and Youtube videos, the unprecedented use of new media and technology in the 2008 US presidential race has implications for political campaigns worldwide and may well be a precursor to future campaigns.



The use of Internet and communication tools such mobile text messaging has enabled the candidates to bypass traditional media and connect with the voters directly.



When Obama announced John Biden was his vice presidential running mate, supporters who had previously registered their phone numbers received the news via text message and email ahead of the news media.



Though both the McCain and Obama campaigns have heavily used the Internet and other technologies, Obama, who is the clear favourite among young voters, is by far the leader in the use of these tools.



Obama is also the only presidential candidate to buy ad space in video games. Eighteen games, including popular "Guitar Hero" and "Madden 09", feature in-game ads from the Obama campaign that appear on billboards and other signage in the game.



Within days of the launch of the iPhone 3g the Obama camp released a special iPhone applet that allowed his supporters to canvass and receive up-to-date campaign news on their iPhone.



In the four years since the last US presidential election, there has been an explosion in what is called the "social media". The media, which primarily includes online social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, has redefined social interaction for the 18-29-year-old generation.



Online social networking sites provide an alternative and easy way for like-minded people to connect with one another, share ideas and form communities. This enables socially diverse and geographically dispersed groups to come together on a common platform.



The Obama and McCain campaigns have their presence on networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.



The Obama camp has official presence on 16 networking and information sharing websites. These range from networking sites such as LinkedIn to the photo-sharing site Flickr.



Extensive use of online video sharing through sites such as Youtube and Brightcove by both candidates and supporters is another feature of the 2008 presidential race and every speech, TV interview and gaffe is publicly available on the web.



Both the candidates have dedicated Youtube channels and thousands of supporters have also posted home-made video clips on the web. In fact, the most-viewed election-related video on Youtube is not by any of the candidates but a small clip by a McCain supporter Iraq war returnee. The clip titled "Dear Mr Obama" attracted 11 million hits.



Modern communication tools provide a powerful means to harness and organise grassroots political support and enable individual volunteers to contribute to the campaigns in an unprecedented way.



The official Obama campaign website provides registered volunteers a detailed script and a list of voters to call. These voters are largely from swing states and volunteers have the option of selecting the state they want to call.



Such tools have revolutionized the extent to which a campaign can take advantage of the volunteer network. Obama's official site claimed that volunteers using the "online voter contact tool" made 431,645 calls on Nov 1.



Thanks to such online tools, volunteers are no longer required to deal with their local campaign offices and can canvass from their homes.



The new technology has not just lowered the barriers for entry into civic participation by reducing the cost, time and effort involved; it has also made the whole process much more interactive and placed more control in the hands of the individual volunteers.



The candidate websites have also evolved since the last elections and both Mccain and Obama have campaign websites that act as one-stop shops for supporters.



Besides giving extensive information including videos about the candidates and their views on various issues, these also provide online volunteer registration and online fund contribution.



Obama's official website Barackobama.com has sections addressing specific groups ranging from "Mediterranean Americans" to "People Of Faith". It also features an "Obama Store" selling campaign T-shirts, mugs, sticker and buttons.



The site also has an "Obama-Biden Tax Calculator" by which one can find out how much tax cut to expect if Obama wins.



Though technology is no substitute for real-life interaction and can never completely replace the traditional baby-kissing and handshake routine of political campaigns, its use for engaging youth, bringing together people with minimum effort and cost, Читать далее...

Los Angeles, Oct 31 (DPA) Barack Obama's 30 minute infomercial was watched by some 30 million viewers Wednesday night and beat the normal ratings of the networks on which it was screened, according to preliminary ratings released Thursday by Nielsen.



The viewing figures showed that for the six networks that aired the programme simultaneously, the spot had a household rating of 21.7 percent, meaning that 21.7 percent of all households watching television were tuned to the spot. The total of network viewers was 26.3 million viewers, with millions more watching on cable channels which also aired the ad.



The only previous time that a presidential candidate has chosen to buy a half hour of TV time was in 1992 when billionaire Ross Perot ran as an independent candidate. His ad drew 16.8 million viewers.

Toronto, Nov 3 (IANS) Popular media coverage of infectious diseases make them seem worse than they are, according to a new Canadian study.



Diseases that surface frequently in the print media -like bird flu - are considered more serious than similar diseases that do not receive the same kind of coverage, such as yellow fever, according to the research.



"The media tend to focus on rare and dramatic events," said Meredith Young, co-author and graduate in the department of psychology, neuroscience & behaviour, McMaster University.



"When a certain disease receives repeated coverage in the press, people tend to focus on it and perceive it as a real threat. This raises concerns regarding how people view their own health, how they truly understand disease and how they treat themselves," added Young.



"Another interesting aspect of the study is when we presented factual information about the diseases along with the names of them, the media effect wasn't nearly as strong," said Karin Humphreys, a co-author and assistant professor at McMaster's.



"This suggests that people can overcome the influence of the media when you give them the facts, and so objective reporting is really critical," Humphreys added.



Equally surprising, said Humphreys, is the fact that the medical students -who would have more factual knowledge about these diseases - were just as influenced by the media, despite their background, according to McMaster release.



Researchers chose 10 infectious diseases drawn from the Centre for Disease Control database. Five were medical disorders that have been highly prevalent in the recent print media -anthrax, SARS, West Nile virus, Lyme disease and avian flu -and five were medical disorders that have not often been present in current media: Tularemia, human babesiosis, yellow fever, Lassa fever and hantavirus.



Two groups of students, undergraduate and medical students, were asked to rate how serious, how prevalent, and how "disease-like" various conditions were.



"We see that a single incident reported in the media, can cause great public concern if it is interpreted to mean that the potential risk is difficult to control, as with the possibility of a pandemic like in the case of Avian flu, and bioterrorism, as in the case of anthrax infection," said Young.



Conversely, when participants were presented with the descriptions of the disease, without the name, they actually thought that the diseases which received infrequent media coverage -the control group -were actually worse.



These findings were published online in the Public Library of Science.

New York, Nov 2 (Xinhua) Gannett Company Inc., the largest US newspaper chain, has announced that it will lay off about 10 percent of its workforce by early December.




The move, together with projected job cuts at Time, New York Times and other big-name media organisations, has made the US economic scenario look even gloomier for many.




Over the past few weeks, a number of US newspapers and magazines have announced their plans to shed jobs so as to lower their operating costs as the pain of the financial crisis spreads well beyond Wall Street.




According to a New York Times report, Gannett's layoffs will not apply to the company's flagship paper, USA Today, but to the company's 84 other daily newspapers in the United States, and more than 800 small, non-daily local papers.




Gannett, the largest US newspaper publisher in terms of daily circulation, reportedly declined to say how many people would lose their jobs. The 10-percent figure translates to roughly 3,000 people.




Besides, Time Warner's Time Inc., the world's largest magazine company, plans a restructuring that could lead to as many as 600 job cuts, or about six percent of its workforce, according to media.




The move was taken in response to the onset of the world financial crisis, which is aggravating an already difficult decline in advertising spending at US newspapers and magazines, particularly as more people shun printed publications in favour of free information on the Internet.




It affects some of the most well-known US magazines, including the Time Weekly news magazine, People, Sports Illustrated and Fortune. All these titles are part of parent company Time Warner, which owns the AOL Internet service as well as the CNN, the popular cable news television network.




"Industry conditions have been challenging due to the financial crisis, which has produced sharp decreases in advertising spending. This is expected to continue through most of 2009," Time Chairman and Chief Executive Ann Moore was cited as writing in a memo to employees.




Just as it prepares for its 100th birthday, the Christian Science Monitor has announced that it will discontinue its Monday-Friday print and will be replaced by a weekly paper edition, as the daily news is picked up by its website, CSMonitor.




The Monitor's editor, John Yemma, was quoted by a report on a website as saying that there will likely be layoffs, but refused to talk about the exact number.




The layoffs will likely occur when the shift goes into effect sometime next April.




The decision was reportedly made as Monitor is feeling the pressure to be more self-supporting. The paper, which tends to cover global and political news from a liberal, analytic perspective, reportedly had $18.9 million in net losses last year with about $12.5 million dollars in revenue.




Earlier in September, The New York Times, the largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States with 98 Pulitzer Prizes, reported that it was shutting down City and Suburban Delivery Systems, a unit that distributed the Times and 200 other publications to newsstands in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas.




With it, the newspaper was reducing 550 full-time union jobs, but a source later said the likely number would be 300 to 600.




As a result of the worsening economic situation, an increasing number of businesses in various sectors have announced their job-cut plans.




In the past two weeks, the list of companies announcing their intention to reduce workforce reads like a Who's Who of corporate America: Merck, Yahoo, General Electric, Xerox, Pratt & Whitney, Goldman Sachs, Whirlpool, Bank of America, Alcoa, Coca-Cola, the Detroit automakers and nearly all the airlines, the International Herald Tribune reported.




When the October job losses are announced Nov 7, three days after the presidential election, many economists expect the number to exceed 200,000. The current US unemployment rate of 6.1 percent is likely to rise, perhaps significantly.




"My view is that it will be near eight or 8.5 percent by the end of next year," said Nigel Gault, the chief domestic economist at Global Insight. That would be the highest rate since the deep recession of the early 1980s.




Analysts say that effective measures must be taken to help people weather the current situation.




New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has taken the lead in adopting some measures to cope with the situation.




On Thursday, he announced 18 initiatives to help New Yorkers cope with the increasing challenges brought by the global, national and local economic downturn.
