Shanghai, Aug 19 (IANS) India and China should look at ways to step up two-way trade and investment to strengthen bilateral ties, delegates at a business forum said here Thursday.
"Indian and Chinese enterprises should avail the huge trade and investment opportunities in the two countries and work towards strengthening bilateral relationship," said S. Jaishankar, Indian Ambassador to China, addressing the forum.
A 90-member business delegation led by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jyotiraditya Scindia, is on a three-day visit to China for the national day of India celebrations at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
The delegation members represent various sectors of the Indian economy like pharma, engineering and real estate.
India-China bilateral trade crossed $30.37 billion in the January-June period and is expected to meet the target of $60 billion by the year-end. However, the balance of trade is still tilted towards China with Indian exports amounting to $11.9 billion, compared to China's shipments to India valued at $18.4 billion.
"Chinese business should be more open to opportunities offered by Indian companies and Indian industry should pay more attention and energy to the Chinese market," added Jaishankar.
"Trade between India and Shanghai has also grown substantially. Shanghai has 89 Indian projects and there are several Shanghai-based Chinese companies executing projects in India," Sha Hailin, chairman of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.
B. Muthuraman, vice president, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), said Indian industry would like more manufacturing companies to invest in China in sectors like pharmaceuticals, machineries and engineering products "to tap the huge Chinese domestic market as also for export to other countries."
The business forum was attended by over 400 participants from the Chinese industry, government and media, Indian companies based in China and members of the Indian business delegation.
New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS) It continued to pour in Delhi Saturday morning for the third consecutive day and the weatherman said the city could expect "heavy rainfall" during the day.
"One or two spells of heavy rainfall are predicted in parts of the city. The skies will continue to remain cloudy," said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The city received 31.7 mm of rainfall from Friday morning till 8.30 a.m. Saturday, the official said.
The minimum temperature was recorded at 26 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year and the maximum is expected to hover around 32 degrees, the official said.
The maximum humidity recorded was 98 percent while minimum was 79 percent. According to the met office, the humidity levels in the city will remain high in the coming days due to continuing rains.
The national capital has received a total 617 mm of rainfall this monsoon.

Washington, Aug 10 (IANS) Indian American engineer Noshir Gowadia, who helped design the propulsion system for the B-2 bomber, has been found guilty of selling military secrets to China, conspiracy and money laundering.
Gowadia, 67, could be sentenced to life in prison in November following his conviction Monday by a jury in Hawaii in one of a series of major prosecutions targeting alleged Chinese spying in the US.

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), Aug 8 (IANS) Tibetans living in exile in India for over five decades will celebrate 50 years of democratic tradition in their adopted land next month.
The celebration will take place Sep 1-2 in Bylakuppe, Karnataka, making this the first time the Tibetans hold a big event outside Dharamsala – the abode of the Dalai Lama and the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
It will be preceded by a meeting of the Tibetan leadership Aug 26-31 to review the work done in the last five decades and to discuss the future and welfare of exiled Tibetans in settlements across India and globally.

India: The Value of an Iranian Friendship
In the face of bolstered U.S. and EU sanctions against Iran, the Indian government is blatantly and publicly discussing ideas on how to circumvent the sanctions and maintain a close trade relationship with Iran. India’s energy competition with China is a large part of what is driving India’s decision-making on this issue, but there are several other geopolitical interests India is considering in demonstrating its intent to openly flout U.S. and EU sanctions on Iran.
Analysis
While the United States and its European allies struggle to get other countries and companies to enforce a new round of sanctions against Iran, the Indian government is openly discussing ways of getting around those sanctions. Details of a report on this subject from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs were leaked to The Times of India recently. The report, called “International Sanctions on Iran and Way Forward for India-Iran Relations,” suggests several “creative mechanisms” that would allow Indian firms to continue trade with Iran without getting caught in the sanctions dragnet.

"Я не перестану вдохновлять"
Первое, что действительно поражает в Свами Вивекананде - его значение в том, чтобы вдохновлять нас. Существуют его жизнь и учение. Для практического осуществления своих идей он оставил после себя сангху, организацию и круг учеников. Великий человек представляет из себя больше принцип, чем отдельную личность. На мой взгляд, самым важным вкладом Свамиджи является вдохновение, которое он создает.
Я помню - и это переживание многих - когда мы были молоды, у нас был второй том писем Свамиджи на бенгали. Эта книга очень вдохновляла. Сейчас она включена в более полное издание под названием Письма Свами Вивекананды. Эти письма были написаны в период между 1890 и 1902 гг. Они вдохновляют, потому что Свамиджи пытался пробудить людей к действию. Ромен Роллан описывал Свамиджи как "олицетворение энергии, действие было его посланием людям". Когда вы читаете его книги, по телу пробегает нервная дрожь, которую способны вызывать только великие писатели, мыслители и певцы. Вы чувствуете, что в вашей жизни пробуждается вдохновение. В этом состоит основная идея: Свамиджи является вдохновителем людей, особенно молодежи. Когда мы вспоминаем его вдохновенные работы, мы чувствуем энергию и энтузиазм. Кровь закипает в венах, мы хотим что-то предпринять. Что происходит дальше? Многое зависит от склада ума. Вдохновение не всегда проявляется аналогичным образом. Можно привести классический пример из рассказов Рамаяны. Жили-были три брата - Равана, Кумбхакарна и Вибхишана. Они занимались практикой сурового аскетизма, который считался основным методом обретения силы, энергии и мудрости. Равана принадлежал к раджасичному типу, в его складе ума доминировала раджогуна. Он стал царем и стал властвовать над тремя мирами, но при этом превратился в тирана. Кумбхакарна был ленив, поэтому с тапасьей его леность только усилилась. Хотя, возможно, в определенной степени это была жадная леность. Он мог поочередно спать шесть месяцев подряд и затем принимать пищу следующие шесть месяцев! Читая об этом, мы можем только улыбаться. Однако надо всегда помнить, что 80% наших действий сосредотачиваются вокруг хорошего сна и хорошей еды в целях личной безопасности. Оставшиеся 20% действий могут включать в себя что-нибудь еще. Вибхишана принадлежал к саттвическому типу и обрел духовное постижение Бога. Смысл этой истории состоит в следующем: духовность может принести вдохновение, однако склад ума человека должен быть в порядке.

Беседа часто переходит на личность Гитлера, которого пакистанцы рассматривают как гениального полководца, вступившего в борьбу с американцами и британцами.
Один из парикмахеров в Исламабаде, к которому пришел стричься немецкий журналист, желая сделать клиенту приятное, подстриг его под Гитлера. Когда журналист заявил, что похож на фюрера, парикмахер радостно закивал, сказав: «Вот именно, получилось очень хорошо».
Положительный образ Гитлера среди местного населения ассоциируется не только с собственно нацистами, но и всеми немцами. При этом рядовые жители Пакистана или Индии, как отмечает Хаснаин Казим, не имеют внятного представления о современной Германии и не хотят признавать, что ФРГ не имеет ничего общего с Третьим рейхом.
К примеру, старые немецкие «Мерседесы» 70-х годов, которые очень популярны, несмотря на дороговизну, хозяева иногда украшают черной свастикой в белом круге на красном фоне. На одной из таких машин, повстречавшихся журналисту, к тому же стояла надпись «Я люблю нацистов». В машине ехала пакистанская семья из семи человек.
Впрочем, почитание Гитлера распространено не только в мусульманских Пакистане и Иране, где оно зачастую подпитывается антиизраильскими настроениями, но и в Индии, где свастика издревле считалась символом солнца и знаком благоприятствования. В индийских школьныхучебниках Гитлера преподносят как великого политика, а английское издание Mein Kampf можно приобрести даже в самых захудалых книжных лавочках глубоко в провинции.

МОСКВА, 5 авг – РИА Новости, Виктор Хруль. Один из экспресс-поездов в Индии в ближайшие дни будет назван именем основательницы Ордена милосердия, лауреата Нобелевской премии мира матери Терезы, которой 26 августа исполнилось бы 100 лет, сообщает в четверг агентство KAI.
По данным агентства, все вагоны состава будут выкрашены в голубой – цвет основанной матерью Терезой женской монашеской конгрегации служительниц милосердия, более известных как «сестры матери Терезы». Министерство путей сообщения Индии пока не сообщило, какие города свяжет новый экспресс, но отмечает, что это будут «важнейшие регионы страны».
Мать Тереза (Агнесса Гонджа Бояджиу) родилась 26 августа 1910 года в нынешней столице Македонии Скопье в албанской семье выходцев из Косова. В 21 год дала монашеские обеты и приняла имя Тереза в честь канонизированной в 1927 году монахини Терезы (из Лизье), известной своей добротой и милосердием.
Тереза основала в Калькутте в конце 1940-х годов монашескую конгрегацию, деятельность которой направлена на создание школ, приютов, больниц для бедных и тяжелобольных людей, независимо от их национальности и вероисповедания.

New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS) About 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year worldwide, with one-third the cases related to tobacco use, one-third to diet, another large percentage to infection and the remaining to pollution, stress and other factors.
According to Lalit Kumar, professor of medical oncology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), three million cases of cancer globally are due to tobacco use alone, with lung cancer claiming half the victims.
A high fat content diet can lead to breast cancer. Women who do yoga or moderate exercise everyday have lower incidence of cancer as compared to women with sedentary lifestyles and high fat intake, Kumar said at a talk at the India International Centre Wednesday evening.
«A high fat diet also acts as a trigger for prostate cancer. Fried food and spicy food is linked to cancer of the esophagus. Preservatives in food and smoked food, which is eaten in some parts of northeast India, also act as triggers for cancer,» he said, adding that high fat intake and low fibre intake can cause colon cancer.
Some fungal infections can lead to liver cancer, while the human papillomavirus has been proven to be the cause of cancer of the cervix. «But the good news is, a vaccine is available and in the next 20 years the incidence of cervical cancer will come down,» he said.
Are cancer cases rising?
«The cancer registries in metros are showing a rise in cancer cases, but that could be due to more people becoming aware and coming for treatment, better facilities available at hospitals and it is now no longer a taboo to talk about cancer. But there is a rise in breast cancer cases.»
«There is a clear evidence breast cancer cases are rising in India,» Kumar said.
It could be due to changes in lifestyle and due to urbanization, he said.
In Delhi, more cases of prostate, lung, urinary bladder and food pipe cancer were seen among elderly men, while breast cancer and cancer of the cervix were seen among women over 60.
North India, including Delhi, has reported gall bladder cancer cases, but surprisingly, south India has not reported such cancer cases. «This indicates something in the diet, in the environment,» he said.
In the West too, gall bladder cancer is uncommon, but cases were seen in Israel, east Europe and Chile and Japan.
Tobacco is one of the biggest culprits of cancer. «We need some legislation. People need to be informed. A bill has to be there,» the expert said, adding, «What is the use of telling people tobacco is injurious to health when they don’t heed it. We find hospital attendants and security guards smoking.»
Alcohol acts as a «co-factor» along with smoking to increase risk of cancer.
Obesity is also linked to cancer. Giving an example of how colon cancer is triggered, he said that for high fat content to be digested bile is secreted, the bile leads to irritation of the colon, which overtime causes the cells to start mutating.
The signs to watch out for are sudden change in bowel movements – constipation and diarrhoea – which is not getting better, passing urine frequently and spotted with blood, ulcer in mouth that is not getting better, vaginal discharge or bleeding, lump in the breast or thickening, choked foodpipe, difficulty in swallowing semi solid or liquid food, change in size of wart or mole, or its colour, persistent smokers’ cough with hoarseness in voice.
However, the good news is if people are aware and get themselves checked then the disease can be treated in the initial stages and the person can live a good life, he said.
In India, around one million people are diagnosed with cancer every year.
