On the set of the latest Narnia epi!

This has to be the most exciting and exclusive post I’ve written on Movie Mazzupial.

Today I got a world exclusive, sneak peek at the latest Chronicles of Narnia film The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which is being shot on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. Well, technically I wasn’t the only media peep there as a representative from AAP wire service and Channel Nine were also treated to the behind the scenes tour. It was still pretty darn awesome. You will have to excuse the Blair Witch-esque photos as they were strict with the use of cameras and I had to take these on my phone. Oh, and please note, I have never been on the set of a Hollywood blockbuster before so you will have to excuse my fanatical gushing every now and then.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the third film in Narnia franchise, which has grossed $1.2 billion at the box-office to date. This adventure sees the two younger Pevensies, Edmund and Lucy, stay with their cousin Eustace Scrubb. The trio find a painting of an old ship and become absorbed into it, where they join the new King Caspian (Ben Barnes) to find the seven lost Lords of Narnia. It takes them to the farthest edge of the eastern world where they must survive storms, sea serpents and invisible enemies to reach lands where magicians weave mysterious spells and nightmares come true.

The production started filming this week at Warner Roadshow Studios, Movie World on the Gold Coast. It’s the biggest feature film to be made in Queensland and considering most of the movies shot on the GC are indie, low-budget or crappy tv shows, understandably the locals have been going ape-shit for any info on the movie. You can appreciate the froth factor from the Movie Mazzupial camp when my efforts to get on-set finally came to fruition. We (the media party of three) were met at the entrance to the studios this afternoon and transported via buggy to one of several lavish sets created for the film.

(Above) This first pic is taken inside sound stage five and the terrible quality of my sneaky photo does not do this set justice. Basically, it’s an expansive garden set with an array of peculiar, somewhat creepy hedges. It gave off a very Alice in Wonderland feel and everything, EVERYTHING, was varying shades of green. It was designed by Francisco Blanc and took local craftsman eight weeks to put together. They will film on this particular set for only three days which is amazing considering the effort put into creating the garden wonderland which, might I add, was made by hand.

И единственным способом увидеть истинную природу героя можно лишь с помощью специального портрета, на котором отображается все его внутреннее уродство.

Премьера фильма запланирована на сентябрь 2009 года, впрочем, Бен Барнс / Ben Barnes — исполнитель роли самого Дориана Грея — получил определенную порцию порицаний за свою работу в «Хроники Нарнии: Принц Каспиан» (2008), поэтому ажиотажа в ожидании премьеры фильма нет.

Dorian Gray to premiere in Toronto

Colin Firth's new film, Dorian Gray, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The British film, which also stars Ben Barnes and Emilia Fox, will debut at the Canadian festival along with Harry Brown, starring Michael Caine, and Perrier's Bounty, featuring Cillian Murphy and Jim Broadbent.

Other films premiering at Toronto include the Coen brothers' latest offering, A Serious Man, Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It, and Colin Farrell's new movie, Triage.

Four films will be shown for the first time in North America. They include Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which stars Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes, Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story, The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee - featuring Robin Wright Penn and Keanu Reeves, and Women Without Men by newcomer Shirin Neshat.

В Австралии начались съемки третьих "Хроник Нарнии" – ура и наконец-тo

В австралийском Квинслэнде стартовали съемки третьей части "Хроник Нарнии", которая вслед за одноименным романом Клайва Льюиса называется "Покоритель зари, или Плавание на край света".

Тут самый момент воскликнуть "наконец-то" и вспомнить, что изначально съемки намечались на зиму 2008 года; потом были перенесены на лето (тогда причиной назвалось "слишком плотное расписание юных актеров"); потом Disney, вообще, отозвала финансирование (случилось это после того, как вторая часть не смогла отбить 200-миллионный бюджет в домашнем прокате), и вопрос о том, когда будет, сменился вопросом, будет ли вообще. Дело спасла 20th Century Fox, решившая кофинансировать проект Walden Media. Впрочем, на съемки мейджор выделил всего 140 млн, что на 60-75 млн., меньше, чем было у "Принца Каспиана", и что нехарактерно для Голливуда, где каждый следующий сиквел делают дороже предыдущего.

Тем не менее, поклонники франшизы, так неактивно ходившие на второй фильм, заметим им в укор, свой повод для радости получили.

Лента будет целиком сниматься в Австралии, и большей частью на Warner Roadshow Studio, расположенной на Золотом Берегу и располагающей самым крупным водным резервуаром в Южном Полушарии. Закончить должны к ноябрю. На пост-продакш — льву усики пририсовать — отведен год. Выйти фильм должен в декабре 2010 года.

В Квинсленде, Австралия, стартовали ленты «Хроники Нарнии: Покоритель Зари», американский релиз которой назначен на 10 декабря 2010 год. В пресс-релизе студии 20th Century Fox и Walden Media официально объявили о начале производственного этапа картины, в основу которой положены произведения К. С. Льюиса.

По данным oKino.ua, главными героями новой картины станут Люси и Эдмунд Певенси, их кузен Юстас отправляются в волшебный мир Нарнии, где всречаются с Каспианом и отправляются вместе с ним на корабле «Покоритель Зари» на поиски его дяди. На пути им доведется встретится с драконами, гномами, бандой разбойников и прочими не слишком приятными представителями загадочной страны.

Ben's fans will all be carrying this picture

Ben Barnes is likely to find himself under siege from fans when the terrific new gothic chiller Dorian Gray opens here in September.

If it is marketed as well as Twilight, then expect Barnes to be in hiding - much like Twilight star Robert Pattinson.

Pattinson was in New York recently and was unable to leave his hotel room because of the hordes of fans surrounding the building.

Thinking about it, though, Barnes (perhaps because he's older) has a better sense of how to operate below the radar and avoid - if he wants! - those girlie mobs.

Even so, if my sense of Oliver Parker's Ealing Studios production, based on Oscar Wilde's classic novel, is correct, then the shrewdly-shot movie will garner Barnes more fame than The Chronicles Of Narnia picture, in which he played Prince Caspian.

The actor plays the handsome title character who appears charming on the surface, but underneath his life is a monstrous corruption.

He has made a devilish pact to retain his youth and beauty while he locks away a portrait of himself that, over time, reveals his true, rotten-to-the-core character.

Colin Firth superbly underplays the aristocrat who leads Dorian into temptation, and newcomer Rachel Hurd-Wood, a stunning screen beauty, captures the delicacy of the ingenue Dorian destroys.

Rebecca Hall, as always, is sublime as the woman who loves him.

Помните, мы писали о том, что Бен Барнс должен сниматься с Элизой Душку в новом проекте в Бостоне? Докладываем: съемки идут полным ходом, фильм называется “Valediction”, и уже есть первые папарацци-фото с площадки плюс вот эта трогательная фанатская картинка Бени и юных поклонников ))

Основной источник информации о фильме - по-прежнему Элиза Душку и ее блог. Со слов актрисы мы знаем, что фильм рассказывает о семейной паре и их 6-летней дочери. Персонаж Барнса Джош попал в автокатастрофу, после которой его дочь Брук впала в кому. “Они узнают, что девочка физически жива - ее мозг в порядке, она просто заперта в своем теле, - рассказывает Элиза. - И отец пытается пробудить ее от трагического сна”.

Честно говоря - не представляю Бена Барнса отцом 6-летней дочери - какой-то странный кастинг в фильме. Но продолжим. Элиза играет Рене, бывшую сотрудницу Джоша, с которой у того был роман. Жену Джоша сыграет Сара Роэмер. “После аварии Джош снова встречается с Рене и задумывается, а что будет, если все начнется заново, - продолжает рассказывать Душку. - Он разрывается между двумя женщинами, плюс еще ситуация с его дочерью - все превращается в настоящий психологический хаос”.

Режиссер психологического хаоса - Сури Кришнамма. Ждем, чего ж она такого наснимает…

Close Up: Ben Barnes Exclusive interview

A lot has happened to Ben Barnes since we were on the Edinburgh Fringe together; The History Boys, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and the soon to be released Dorian Gray, but some things never change; he’s still as funny, friendly and charming as he was when he was starting out, writes Phil Matthews.

Ben, I’m guessing you must have caught the acting bug at school?
It actually sort of came through music, I was in the choir at school. When I was about 15 the National Youth Music Theatre came to do a workshop and asked if I’d like to come to their annual auditions which I consequently did, and ended up basically working with that company for the next six straight summers doing various productions, particularly in Edinburgh, the Opera House in Covent Garden and Bugsy Malone in the West End – that was my first proper job, I was working in the band.

What I really wanted to do was acting, but I had no idea how to go about it

Yeah you’re a talented musician I’ve heard.
I played drums in the band for that show, but there was such a wide variety of new shows as well, it was creative. You felt like you were part of the creative team and that’s what I really enjoyed. And then I sort of carried that on after school, when I went to university. My parents just threatened to disown me, basically, if I didn’t go to university. So I obviously decided not to go. I took a couple of years out to do various music projects and TV hosting, which I didn’t really enjoy because I didn’t think I was very good at it, particularly the TV presenting side of things. What I really wanted to do was acting, but I had no idea how to go about it. I’d been writing off hundreds of letters to agents and getting very curt one line replies. So I applied to university and went to Kingston where I studied Drama with English Literature. There was no theatre company at university. Obviously having had a little bit of experience already, I was part of the team who formed the first drama company there and put on the first productions. So I got into directing a lot of plays there and then acted in plays obviously, and then took them up to Edinburgh.

What’s your memories of doing Edinburgh?
My first ever experience of the Edinburgh Festival was the one summer that I didn’t get into the NYMT. That year I went with my school theatre company and I did a play called Inside the Island which actually got five stars in the Scotsma and it was better received than the NYMT show. That was when I was 16, sleeping on floors with 10 other lads and doing that play. Then I went up with the NYMT several times.

Ben Barnes, better known as Caspian, lives in a world of red carpets and hysterical fans. He tells Alice Jones about hero-worship, Narnia, and his new role in Oscar Wilde's famous tale of narcissism

It can be hard work being a Hollywood hero. Just ask Ben Barnes, a.k.a. Prince Caspian, star of the billion-dollar-grossing Chronicles of Narnia franchise.

There's the grinding tour of world premieres ("Travelling for three months, sitting on your own in a hotel room in Taiwan, thinking, 'what am I doing here?' Just weird.") and the red-carpet appearances where your every move is greeted by an electric storm of flashbulbs ("I don't think there's any way of ever being comfortable with it. You put on a perma-grin, which is so unnatural, and the lights make you squint. I get very anxious."). There's the frankly disconcerting experience of seeing your very own toy action figurine for the first time. "My own was absolutely awful, shamefully bad. I was a bit upset by that. How many times do you get an action figure made of you? Mine looked like a cross between Adrien Brody and Javier Bardem – but ill." There's the tireless and tiresome conveyor belt of press junkets and interviews.

"They take as much out of you as filming does", sniffs Barnes. "I thought, 'it's only chatting, how hard can it be?'" As it turned out, the New York round of Prince Caspian promotion very nearly wiped this swashbuckling regent out: he did 90 interviews in one day, woke up the next with no voice and found he had to do 70 more, dosed up on a cocktail of vitamin C, honey and lemon, and Chinese potions. "I didn't really have a choice. The film was called Prince Caspian, there was no hiding." Appearing on Jay Leno's sofa was a rare highlight. "Have you seen it? It's definitely the best interview I've done..."

And then there are the fans, the prolifically letter-writing, largely female fans. Barnes spends "thousands of pounds" replying to the sacks of mail he receives each month. When he casually thanked a fan in an interview for throwing a pair of "Hello Kitty" boxer shorts at him as he arrived at Tokyo airport ("It was a bit creepy, but they were clean and I'd been travelling for three months..."), his mailbox was swiftly inundated with cutesy cartoon-cat underwear. "What part of a 27-year-old English man wants that?" he asks, incredulous. "I don't know what to do with them, they just sit there in a pile."

Not that Barnes is complaining, of course. It's just that all this fanfare and adulation has happened rather suddenly and the slight actor from Wimbledon hasn't quite caught up. "Somebody needs to give me an alternative to the word 'overwhelming'. People don't want to hear that. They want to hear that you enjoy it." Who wouldn't be overwhelmed, though, at the sight of themselves brandishing a sword on a 10-storey billboard on Sunset Boulevard? Or at being the centre of attention at the UK's largest ever film premiere, which drew 10,000 Narnia fans to the 02? Or at a head-spinning $419m in box-office receipts?

One year ago, few had heard of Barnes. He had a fleeting appearance in the Hollywood fantasy film Stardust and a West End play under his belt. Prince Caspian's casting director was in the audience for The History Boys one night and saw something in Barnes's swagger as the peacock of the class, Dakin. They called him in for an audition and a week later he had the part. He was immediately dispatched to "Narnia boot camp", where he learned to gallop, sword-fight and bellow war-cries, before a seven-month shoot in New Zealand and Prague.

Бен Барнс совсем скоро должен начать сниматься в новом фильме с Элизой Душку. Съемки будут проходить в Бостоне - и Бен уже приехал в этот город. Даже произвел разведку по местным барам - на фото мы видим парня в компании промоутера Майкла Уинтера в клубе Wisckey Park.

Фото и информация служат для фанатов доказательством того, что проект - не слухи, а святая правда. До этого Элиза Душку рассказывала в интервью, что намерена сниматься в Бостоне с Барнсом в психологической драме по прекрасному сценарию. Официальной информации об этой картине нет, на страничке Барнса на IMDb ничего не значится, однако в планах Элизы стоит фильм “The Perfect Moment”, которым занимается как раз Boston Diva Productions. Фильм рассказывает историю жизни фотографа Роберта Мапплторпа: его пути к славе в 70-х годах и смерти в 1989 году. Кого будут играть Элиза и Бен, также неизвестно - но хорошо уже то, что мы поняли, о чем идет речь! ))

The Instand Review: Easy Virtue

Who: In this adaptation of a Noel Coward play, Jessica Biel plays Larita, the glamorous (and blonde) new wife of John (Ben Barnes), the handsome and empty-headed scion of an aristocratic family of twits and snobs in 1920s Britain. He brings her home to the dismay of his imperious mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) but the delight of his dad (Colin Firth), a witty outsider who suffers from his war experiences and is, in the words of the screenplay, “quietly sardonic.”

What: The movie begins as a drawing room comedy of the old fashioned sort, with mother turning up her nose at this newcomer (a suspected gold-digger, as well as a vulgar American), father welcoming her, and various other friends and neighbours revealing themselves as typical fox-hunting upper crust who spend their days playing tennis and being sporty. Soon, it turns more serious, a kind of drawing room melodrama with Larita fighting for her dignity in face of the insults and hauteur of an uncaring society. Meanwhile, a series of Noel Coward and Cole Porter tunes — Mad Dogs and Englishmen, for instance, or Let’s Misbehave — are sampled and the family Chihuahua is constantly on camera for reaction shots as the family and Larita clash.

Bottom line: As directed by Stephan Elliott (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), this is a stodgy costume drama with a miscast Biel barely holding her own against a talented British cast — Firth and Scott Thomas are especially strong — and the clash of tones between wit and venom making an uncomfortable mix.

Key line: Father, at an uncomfortably quiet dinner: “Is it my imagination, or is the cutlery particularly deafening this evening?”

The verdict: A stuffy, not to say ossified, social comedy that’s worth watching mostly for the charms of Colin Firth and the performance of Scott Thomas of the mother-in-law from hell.
