SCARCELY one would ask the question to somebody. Logic, lying in the root of patriotism had long been forgotten and it was replaced by vague patriotic emotion. This logic has perfectly represented by French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Peasants make food, but they cannot defend themselves. So, a knyaz (future tsar) comes with his druzhina and says: ‘feed us and we will protect you’. It is as profitable to peasants as to warriors.
Thus formulating the thing that Rousseau called ‘social contract’. But after this kind of symbiosis the feeling of ‘common faith’ emerges, named this way by Lev Gumilev, a historian. Warriors, peasants and other ‘specialties’, having come into existence, are imbued with proximity sensation. With the time the feeling turns into patriotism, while as pragmatic basics fade into insignificance.
Many processes encourage this tendency. New and new generations don’t remember what it feels like not to be with social contract. Social structure constantly complicating; sacrificers, stylists, designers appear and more and more difficult to appreciate on what terms all these people have their piece of social pie. Finally, the spirit of patriotism, in itself, when developing rejects ‘cynicism’ from whence it is taken. For example, it is a very popular in Russian culture image of soldier that is ‘suckered’ by his state, but all the same leaves faithful to his duty, like some kind of Christian martyr. Namely, love to his country – apart and social liabilities to each county’s citizen – apart.
Social evolution accumulates ‘genetic errors’, which distort social contract and draw ‘economical blanket’ over the special social layers or even over concrete people. Many among us are acquainted with a feeling of aversion, when we hear that somebody who goes away from the country and isn’t going to return ever. We suppress this feeling, since every man, we suppose has a right to order his life completely. Or maybe idle we suppress the feeling.
An emigrant takes himself from us in a one-way fashion; he wins from that self, but maybe after that we have already fulfilled our part of contract. Even the root of word ‘community’ which descends from word ‘common’ shows that each member of society partly belonging to all other members. Constraints of cosmopolitism (citizens of the world) by Soviet Union in this context seems rather less disgusting then today’s twofold and triple citizenship or stars’ and big-wigs’ practice ‘to live in two countries’, being in each of them during a month.
And whether it’s according with social contract that financial speculators have their extra remunerating from these ones’ schemes? What do they do for community for what they merit such high payments? Large number of enterprisers designedly does exploration of sore spots in social system for to give little sums and efforts but still getting many for themselves. Buy cheap, sell costly – eternal principle of trade. They say this is ‘success’ or ‘market niche’ but what if they barely creates a new regular distortion of initial social contract?
Cancer of distortions, exactly like real cancer, does not exterminate logic of social contract in full. It makes it to actuate wrong sometimes. The more a cancerous growth, the more frequently a social machine would mistake.
Let us take the war as the example. A society enlists young men from all over the lend to send them in adjacent state: it’s better to fight on foreign soil then on somebody’s own. it’s better to a guy from a small town in inner Russia to defend some near-boder village then waiting the foe on his house’s threshold and seeing on his family being been mocked in case of defeat. This is not politics and not ‘cruel meaningless of war’. This is defense of guy’s mother and sister. Besides, ‘There is no avoiding war; it can be only postponed to the advantage of others’, - Niccolo Machiavelli said. All actuates logical and in whole spirit of social contract. But then, the soldier is perishing, defending his country, and in the meantime there is a moneymaker, quite frostbitten and selfish to ignore patriotism, community and social contract – this is the question of the conscience, it isn’t embraced by laws.
