Carl's movie debut.

DIRTY Pretty Things singer Carl Barat has told how his movie debut might also spell the end of his big-screen career.

He stars as rocker Gene Vincent in Telstar - the biopic of 60s maverick producer Joe Meek - which premieres at the London Film Festival next month.

But Carl says he did not take the role seriously enough - and is terrified of going to the screening in case he is rotten.

He said: "I'd like to do more acting, although there is a bit more to it than I thought.

"It was surprising how difficult it was - it was all over very quickly. One minute I heard 'action', the next it was finished.

"Telstar was a good experience but I would really like to prove to myself that I could do it a little bit better. I'm not happy with it - or with what I remember of it at least.

"I'm scared to go to the premiere in case I'm diabolical.

It will be a very scary night."

Retro singer Duffy has recorded a cover of Meek's Please Stay for the film while the rest of the soundtrack is made up of the original hits.

Carl - who plays the ABC in Glasgow on Saturday - has already been offered more movie roles.

But he wants to step away from his comfort zone by playing parts from outside the music world.

He said: "I have something coming up. It's a very different direction - a part you really would not expect me to play which makes it very exciting.

"And I'll be playing a scientist in a new British film which will be weird but cool."

Carl was recently forced to quit drinking for three months after suffering from pancreatitis and says giving up booze could be the best thing that ever happened to him.

He said: "Being off booze has really helped in terms of creativity.

"Things are distorted with the booze haze and you don't know what's good for you. I plan to stay away from it and have replaced it with a new vice - writing. I only used to write when I had to. Now I'm doing it in a good way which is amazing.

"This could all turn out to be a huge landmark in my life as I am throwing myself into music again.

"My life had become all about booze and now it isn't any more."

Carl's resolve will be tested when he and bandmate Didz Hammond DJ at Bunker on Saturday at the after-party for their ABC show.

He said: "We'll just play whatever we fancy. It's a way of opening up the after-show party to the fans. It's a bit of fun and we will enjoy it too."

DIRTY PRETTY THINGS frontman CARL BARAT enjoyed his recent stint as an actor so much, he's plotting a return to the big screen - and has already landed a role as a scientist in a new British movie.
The former Libertines guitarist starred as rock legend Gene Vincent in the upcoming film Telstar, which charts the life of pioneering music producer Joe Meek.
Now he has lined up another movie role - but is keeping the details under wraps.
He says, "I have something coming up. It's a very different direction (to Telstar) - a part you really would not expect me to play which makes it very exciting. I'll be playing a scientist in a new British film which will be weird but cool."
Telstar is set to premiere at the London Film Festival next month (Oct08).

Pete Doherty made a dedication to his former Libertines bandmate Carl Barat last night (October 2) at a solo show at the Hackney Empire in London.

The singer/guitarist spoke about Barat's band Dirty Pretty Things splitting up. The four-piece, also featuring former Libertine Gary Powell, announced their break-up on Wednesday (September 30).

"I'd like to dedicate this song to Carlos Barat," Doherty declared before playing Libertines B-side 'Plan A' acoustically to open his set.

"He announced the death of Dirty Pretty Things," he continued. "They're going to see out the tour but after that, that's that."

After playing the song Doherty left the stage to make way for a four-piece band that included Wolfman – who Doherty had a UK Top Ten hit with in 2004 with 'For Lovers'.

The ensemble played 'Withdrawn And Shaken', 'Darksome Sea', 'Broken Love Song' and the aforementioned 'For Lovers'. The songs were written by Wolfman, although may appear on Doherty's forthcoming solo album.

Following the short set Doherty returned to the stage and played a set of songs by Babyshambles, The Libertines, his solo compositions and three covers.

He was joined by a plethora of guests. Those who made cameos included his former Pentonville prison cell-mate The General (for 'Pentonville Rough') and singer Dot Allison (for 'Sheepskin Tearaway').

Возмутители спокойствия The Libertines как никогда близки к воссоединению. Как сообщалось ранее, бывшие участники группы Пит Доэрти (Pete Doherty) и Карл Барат (Carl Barat) объединили свои усилия в работе над мюзиклом для лондонского независимого театра Donmar Warehouse.

По словам одного из друзей музыкантов, сотрудничество протекает очень плодотворно. Новые песни "сыплются как из рога изобилия" и — возможно — часть из них будет отложена для включения в новый альбом Libertines.

Напомним, что Libertines распались в 2004-м году, выпустив два альбома, вызвавших горячий отклик публики и критиков. Несмотря на то, что их пути разошлись, Карл и Пит неоднократно указывали, что остаются друзьями и хотели бы когда-нибудь в будущем поработать вместе.

Доэрти и Барат уже сочинили достаточно нового материала, но еще не приступали к студийным сессиям, так как в середине июня вокалист Dirty Pretty Things попал в госпиталь.

Сейчас здоровью музыканта ничего не угрожает и несколько дней назад он был выписан из больницы. Врачи рекомендовали Карлу соблюдать покой, однако рокеру вряд ли это удастся, так как в будущий уикенд он твердо намерен выступить на фестивале Гластонбери.

"Я чувствую себя намного лучше. На прошлых выходных врачи позволили мне вернуться домой, посоветовав не напрягаться без особого повода. Правда это будет трудновато, — говорит Барат. — У нас запланированы репетиции перед выходом нового лонгплея Dirty Pretty Things , кроме того, в субботу мы выступаем в Швейцарии, а на следующий день я отыграю акустический сет на Гластонбери".

Напомним, релиз нового альбома Dirty Pretty Things "Romance At Short Notice" состоится 30 июня.
