Carnations, Dianthus caryophyllus, are flowering herbaceous plants of the PINK family, Caryophyllaceae, which also includes SWEET WILLIAM and other popular, usually fragrant ornamentals. The carnation is native to Eurasia and has been cultivated for more than 20 centuries. An older English name for it is gillyflower. Some carnation varieties are grown outdoors, but many are greenhouse plants.

The carnation, as it is known in North America, is 0.6 to 1 m (2 to 3.5 ft) tall, has a brittle, slightly branching stem, narrow opposite leaves, and large terminal double flowers, usually ruffled or toothed. Predominant colors are red, white, and pink, but occasionally yellow or purple is seen.

Carnations can be propagated by planting young flowering shoots taken from the stems of mature plants or by planting terminal shoots after the flower is cut. The stem can also be bent into the ground to root. The plants need sun and well-drained soil. A rich loamy soil with some sand and a small amount of manure and leaf mold works well. Stem rots and wilt diseases can attack carnations.

Welcome

A very warm welcome to the National Breast Cancer Foundation website

The ultimate goal of the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s is to raise enough money to fund a cure for breast cancer. As Australia’s leading national not-for profit organisation established to fund all forms of research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer, we have a responsibility to ensure that the funds you work so hard to raise are used in the best possible way as we move towards making our goal a reality.
Over the past ten years, the NBCF research programs have built a reputation of prestige and excellence through their rigorous peer-review processes that consider the projects quality, feasibility and relevance to breast cancer.

The NBCF is unique in its research funding as it is the only community organisation that awards funds specifically for research across the continuum of breast cancer - from genetics to treatment, to support and palliative care. Funds raised are directed to the best research in Australia – we are neither limited by state boundaries nor institutional policies. We have no vested interest other than ensuring we progress knowledge about breast cancer.

As a nation, we have all the ingredients to successfully push onwards towards the prevention, and eventual cure for breast cancer but the most important part of the recipe is you.
See where your money goes - details of NBCF funded research

The NBCF commenced funding Kathleen Cuningham Research Grants in 1996, Postgraduate Research scholarships in 2001 and Career Development Awards in 2004.

Since inception the National Breast Cancer Foundation has funded over $26 million in research funds, sponsoring 152 projects.
