Ightham Mote.Kent alex_zbruew : 26-12-2010 10:16

Ightham Mote is a rare surviving example of a moated medieval manor house dating from the early part of the 14th-century with important later additions and alterations. The earliest building phase included the Great Hall Crypt Old Chapel and two Solars.

The builder of Ightham Mote is as yet unknown but the first known owner was Sir Thomas Cawne (c1360-1374).A series of owners have each made an impact to varying degrees upon both the interior and exterior of the house. Most notable of these was Edward Haut (1487-1519) who enclosed the Courtyard and constructed the cottage range.

A Grade I listed building and in part a Scheduled Ancient Monument Ightham Mote is according to Pevsner 'the most complete small medieval manor house in the country' and provides a remarkable picture of architectural development over more than five centuries.

Oxford - A University City alex_zbruew : 26-12-2010 10:04

The City of Dreaming Spires is perhaps the most famous university city in the whole world and the oldest too, at least in the English speaking World. The city is characterized by its harmonious architecture of its university buildings, hidden passages, tranquil squares and fantastic museums. The University buildings seem to be in competition with each other ; trying to outdo the others in terms of grandness and beauty, which got me thinking that the city needs a 21st century icon, a new building, preferably designed by Zaha or Gehry.

Oxford has a population of just under 165,000, but feels much larger. It was first occupied in Saxon times, and was initially known as Oxenaforda. The University of Oxford is first mentioned in 12th century records. As the University took shape, friction between the hundreds of students living where and how they pleased led to a decree that all undergraduates would have to reside in approved halls. During the English Civil War, Oxford housed the court of Charles I in 1642, after the king was expelled from London, although there was strong support in the town for the Parliamentarian cause. It later housed the court of Charles II during the Great Plague of London in 1665–66. Although reluctant to do so, he was forced to evacuate when the plague got too close. By the early 20th century, Oxford was experiencing rapid industrial and population growth, with the printing and publishing industries becoming well established by the 1920s. Also during that decade, the economy and society of Oxford underwent a huge transformation as William Morris established the Morris Motor Company to mass produce cars in Cowley, on the south-eastern edge of the city.

Oxford is one of the most diverse small cities in Britain.

Text from Wiki.

St Botolph's Aldgate

The first written record of this church appears in 1115 when it was received by the Holy Trinity Priory but the parochial foundations may very well be pre-1066. The church was rebuilt in the 16th Century and then again between 1741-1744 to designs by George Dance the Elder. The church is a short walk away from Mitre Square, the site of the murder of Catherine Eddowes by Jack the Ripper as well as easy access to the other 4 murder sites off 1888. It was often referred to as the "Church of Prostitutes" in the late Victorian period for a very strange reason. The church is situated on an island of land surrounded by roadways. It was common in Victorian times to be suspicious of women stood on street corners and so this made them easy targets for the police. To avoid this the prostitutes would parade around the island that the church and Aldgate tube station now occupy, thus avoiding "hanging around street corners".
