Matt's Mood: Matt Bianco's New Album Featuring Basia

I love Basia! She has an incredible voice and obviously has a jazz background. Her music is so much more sophisticated than the bland pop that you often hear on the radio. I bought every Basia album from 1990 to 1995 and then she just disappeared. I was very excited earlier this year when I heard that Matt Bianco, the band of which Basia used to be a member, had released a new album featuring her on every song! I immediately went online and tried to find the cd. I finally found it via amazon.com imports and anxiously awaited the cd's arrival. This cd is incredible! It surpassed all of my expectations. I had expected that Basia's voice would have dimished in the 10 years since her last album, Basia on Broadway. She sounded better than ever! Matt Bianco is made up of monster musicians, all well versed in jazz. There are fantastic saxophone solos, especially on Ronnie's Samba, featuring the late baritone saxophonist, Ronnie Ross.

Danny White: keyboards

I won't review every song, but the entire album is great. Every song is very well written. I will review my personal favorites in no particular order.

Golden Days is wonderful. It is track 6 on the album and is just a great experience to listen to. It has great horn arrangements featuring Kevin Robinson on trumpet and flugelhorn. Very sophisticated writing. 10 out of 10 stars.

I Never Meant To is a sentimental love song about love, pain, and breakups. Mark Reilly does the lead vocals with the backing vocals done by Basia. A very good love song. 8 out of 10 stars.

La Luna is a beautiful Latin piece with Basia on lead vocals. It has great piano parts and Basia sounds fantastic. It also has a great sax solo by the late Ronnie Ross. Ross died several years ago and was featured on Matt Bianco's early albums. Through the miracle of modern technology, his old recorded solos were inserted into the new songs. 8 out of 10 stars.

Matt's Mood 3 is a funky instrumental piece that i love to play along with on my sax. It has a samba feeling to it and has a very nice trumpet solo. 8 out of 10.

There are three songs on this album that i think will be classics: Ordinary Day, Ronnie's Samba, and Say The Words. They are all masterpieces.

When you listen to Ordinary Day listen to the lyrics and the chord changes. Very sophisticated! Nobody writes songs like these anymore. I can't give any one of these 3 songs enough stars so I won't try.

"So here it is children, yet another chance Special delivery for one final dance. ...By now you know true love never dies.." These are some of the lyrics in Ronnie's Samba. If I were deserted on an island, Ronnie's Samba is one of the songs that I would take with me. Great lyrics, great sax solo, masterful musicianship all around.

Say the Words has become my favorite song of all time. It is from beginning to end amazing! If music could be perfect, to me this would be it. When I listened to it the first time, I felt enriched as a person for having heard it. The lyrics to Say the words are below:
