Basics tutorial using PSP 8!

There are several tutorials under this cut covering basic knowledge every icon maker should know. Im using PSP 8. Dont know if all things can be translated in other programs but you can try. The things I cover are:
Quality of pics
Cropping
Borders
Brightening Images
Outlining Text-1 px
Basic knowledge needed like what the crop tool looks like and how to resize stuff.
Beware! IMAGE HEAVY so yeah.
Disclaimer: There are many different ways to go about doing any of this. These are the steps that I take and think are the easiest to make. I am not saying that you HAVE TO do these steps this way this is simply a way to explain basic steps.
Quality
Its not that hard to tell the difference between High Quality and Low Quality. But in case you dont know the difference, here are two examples. One High, one low.
Low Quality: Eliza pic
High Quality: Ashlee pic
The Eliza pic is foggy, not too clear. Unlike the Ashlee picture. The colors are clear as is the image.
CROPPING
1. Pick a nice high quality picture. The better the quality the better your icon will come out.
2. Outline the part of your picture you want. Make sure the area you pick is equal in size. See picture if you are unclear as to what I mean. The area I picked was 1060x1060.

3. Resize. Make sure when you resize, you set your resample size to SMART SIZE. If you dont, your picture will come out pixilated.

4. Sharpen. You should always sharpen the image at least once after you have resized it.

5. The rest you can do on your own or see Brighten Images part of this tutorial.
BORDERS:
If you are going to have a 1 pixel border around your icon its easy really!
1. Pick a nice high quality picture. The better the quality the better your icon will come out.
2. Outline the part of your picture you want. Make sure the area you pick is equal in size. See picture if you are unclear as to what I mean. The area I picked was 1060x1060.
3. Resize. Make the dimensions 98x98. The 1 px border ads 2 pixel sizes in the end. Dont ask me why but it does.
4. Make sure when you resize, you set your resample size to SMART SIZE. If you dont, your picture will come out pixilated.

5. Sharpen.

6. Brighten or do whatever else you wan to do.
7. Go to Image >> Add border >> Pick your color >> OK.

8. Tada! You have a border!
BRIGHTENING IMAGES
This can be done many different ways. Here are some way that I do them. Again, do not feel compelled to do them these ways.
Brighten option 1:
1. Pick your picture.
2. Crop.
3. Resize. [do you want a border on it? If you do make sure you resize it to 98x98. If not regular 100x100]
4. Sharpen.
5. Go to Adjust >> Brightness & Contrast >> Brightness/Contrast.
6. The window the pops out, my brightness is 15 contrast 20. I try to keep the difference of 5. You can tweak the numbers until you find something you like.

7. Press Ok & youre done. [add border if your image was 98x98]

Brighten option 2:
1. Pick your picture.
2. Crop.
3. Resize. [do you want a border on it? If you do make sure you resize it to 98x98. If not regular 100x100]
4. Sharpen.
5. Go to Adjust >> Brightness & Contrast >> Levels
6. The window the pops out, adjust your setting similar to mine, or tweak until you find something you like.

7. Press Ok & youre done. [add border if your image was 98x98]

OUTLINING TEXT
1. Open up a new image 100x100.
2. Pick the color you want the outline of the text to be. [ I chose black. ]
3. Chose your font. [ Im choosing 04b_24 size 6 font can be found here ]
4. Change the setting from vector to floating.

5. Write what you want >> Apply
6. Got to Selection >> Modify >> Expand

7. Window will pop op, press ok
8. Make sure the number of pixels is 1!

9. Press okay.
10. Ctrl+C [copy] go to your icon that youre going to put the text on.
11. Ctrl+L [paste as a new image].
12. Move the text around with the move tool until you see fit.
13. Tada! [показать]
