Years ago during the first stage of work around campus sexual assault I was introduced to a young woman who had been raped in her dorm room. The university refused to hear her because the rapist was not a student. The police refused to hear her because, before it turned ugly, she had invited the rapist into her room. She followed all of the suggestions I could think of, but ultimately she was denied any form of justice. Later, I heard about a film project designed to educate universities and the public. I asked her if she’d be willing to speak on camera. Her experience could not have taught to trust “helpers” and, despite her strength, it would have been impossible for her not to have internalized all the victim-blaming that she’d been subjected to. But she spoke so beautifully and intimately about what she’d been subjected to by the perpetrator and by collaborators that the film had a profound impact. And . . . she was proud to do it. It ought to be that we improve our response to rape simply because it is the only right thing to do. But for now, our progress seems dependent on women who somehow find within themselves the courage and self-belief to teach us. We can’t call it Women’s History Month unless we include such heroes.
