We had to decide on the costumes and uniforms for the main characters. I had seen that 'little German housewife' in a nightclub in Berlin wearing a man's suit and a hat and wanted her to wear the same in one of the scenes in Marocco. I wanted her to sing a french song and to kiss a woman while going through the audience in a little cafe. That masculine attitude would rise her charme. I didn't only want to show a lesbian scene but Marlene's own special sexuality.

Rouben Mamoulian: she kissed another girl

Her screen image was much raunchier than Garbo's, far more that of the blatant femme fatale but possibly because she was pointed in the wrong direction by Sternberg and others, or possibly for fear of offending the Code, she never quite made the impact in Hollywood that she might have done. She had the most amazing legs and an intriguing touch of sexual ambivalence - in her first American film, Marocco, in which co-starred with Gary Cooper, she kisses another girl on the lips while attired in full masculine evening dress of the top hat and tails. Well, this was dangerous stuff in 1930 /c/
