"The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO"

Book Excerpt:
I knew what Moe meant when he referred to my broken heart. I feel that everyone in this world of ours has had a broken heart at some time or another. I'm not just referring to the broken heart that occurs when we lose someone we love-I mean the breaking of our hearts that happens when we begin to realize that our dreams have faded and our deepest longings have never been fulfilled, when we see the current state of our world and the less-than-loving values that run it, and when we sell ourselves short in life and minimize our destinies. I thought about what Benjamin Disraeli once said: "Life is too short to be little."
Moe continued to speak. "This beach is a good metaphor for your life, Jack. Life is a beach in so many ways. It reflects a journey that has its sandy parts as well as its rocky areas, and it has its curves and its straightaways. Sometimes you see the crashing waves when you wake up in the morning and feel the fury of the ocean; other times there's a blissful calm and not a thing stirs. As I've lived my life out on this beach, I've come to understand that the laws of life are really nothing more than the laws of nature. Study the way nature operates and you can figure out how life, at its truest level, works."
Father Mike had taught me this as well.
"I'll give you an example," said Moe. "I've spent many nights alone out here on this beach. Sometimes I'll stay up all night, just breathing and thinking and soaking up the majesty of this place. It never ceases to amaze me how the brightness of the dawn always comes immediately after the darkest part of the night. And that's the same in our lives. Each and everyone of us has to endure darkness-but it always passes, and the light always returns. It's actually at the moment when you're most into your problems that you're closest to your solutions. And when you're experiencing the deepest pain, your greatest peace is running toward you."
I'd never thought of life with this perspective before. Moe's wisdom had a certain grace and elegance about it and was similar to the teachings Father Mike had so lovingly shared with me-both spoke to an extraordinary intelligence of the world we live in. According to both of these masters, each human being's life seemed to unfold according to a precise plan-everything happened for a reason, and life was nothing less than a miraculous gift.
"Let me give you some practical advice now, Jack. One of the first things you can do to reconnect with your heart is to rekindle the passions that have died within you. Start doing the things that, in the past, filled up that big heart of yours. Begin to do what speaks to the passionate kid within you and make you laugh so hard your belly hurts. Rediscover the things that move you and bring tears to your eyes-after all, the place where tears are brought to your eyes is the place where the universe wants you to be."
"To those inner calls, Jack. Pay more attention to those silent and gentle promptings that speak from the deepest places within you. They're there, they have a voice, and they're crying out to be heard. You knew them when you were a kid-get to know them again as an adult."
"I'm so detached from this kind of thing that I'm afraid I've lost any kind of a connection to this deeper part of myself. I know I'm shut down, and I really do live in my head. But I'm willing to start listening for these inner calls you speak of."
"Wonderful," Moe replied. "Your intention to begin listening to your heart more is a giant step toward opening it and benefiting from the enormous gifts it has to give you. Intentions alone are like huge waves that cascade throughout the universe and they inevitably return bearing wonderful presents. Just keep listening and observing.”
