Actually, setting someone free does not presume them going away (at least not necceserilly). Thus, before the second statement there should be another: "Should they go away, then...[if they return to you...]". Otherwise, if you love someone, they love you, you set them free, they stay with you, then you end up killing them and/or running away from them. Mystics.
