Raphael Cohen-Almagor has B.A. in Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, Tel Aviv Universi ty (1983‑1985), Magna cum Laude; M.A. in Political Science, Tel Aviv Universi ty (1985‑1987), Magna cum Laude; D.Phil. in Politics (Political Theory), St. Catherine’s College, Oxford Universi ty (1987-1991). He is now Associate Professor at the Department of Communication, Universi ty of Haifa .  In 2000-2003 he was Chairperson of Library and Information Studies at the Universi ty of Haifa . In 1999-2000 he received the Fulbright-Yitzhak Rabin Award and was a Visiting Professor at UCLA School of Law. For 2003/4 he received a Senior Fellowship at the Center for Policy Studies, and Visiting Professorship at the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins Universi ty .

 

 

Raphael is the founder and director of the Center for Democratic Studies at the Universi ty of Haifa , established in July 2003. He was General Secretary and afterwards Chairperson of “The Second Generation to the Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance” Organization in (1983‑1987). Among his other many activities he was Director, Think-tank on Medical Ethics, The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute (1995-1998); Member of the Israel Press Council (1997-2000); and Member of the Public Committee on the Dying Patient, Ministry of Health, Jerusalem (2000-2002). 

 

 

Professor Cohen-Almagor has published numerous articles in the fields of medical ethics, philosophy, political science, law, media ethics, sociology and history in English, French, Turkish, Romanian, S panish and Hebrew. He is the author of Middle Eastern S hores (1993, Hebrew, poetry), The Boundaries of Liber ty and Tolerance (1994), S peech, Media and Ethics (2001, 2005), The Right to Die with Digni ty : An Argument in Ethics, Medicine, and Law  (2001), Euthanasia in the Netherlands (2004), The S cope of Tolerance (2006), and editor of Basic Issues in Israeli Democracy (1999, Hebrew), Liberal Democracy and the Limits of Tolerance: Essays in Honor and Memory of Yitzhak Rabin (2000), Challenges to Democracy: Essays in Honour and Memory of Isaiah Berlin (2000), Medical Ethics at the Dawn of the 21st Century (2000), Moral Dilemmas in Medicine (2002, Hebrew), Israeli Democracy at the Crossroads and Israeli Institutions at the Crossroads (both in 2005). Professor Cohen-Almagor is now writing The Catch of Democracy: Freedom of Ex press ion and Its Limits. He has completed a second poetry book titled Travels.
