The Politics of Health: Call for Papers

Contributions are invited for a special issue of Theoria aimed at exploring the politics and ethics of health and health care. For this special issue contributors are invited to reflect on the relationships between health, justice, power and knowledge in the context of medical provision, health research, health care policies, global interdependence and the spread or resurgence of pandemic diseases such as AIDS and SARS.

Contributions from across the social sciences and humanities, both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary, will be welcomed.

Contributors are encouraged to reflect directly on the meaning of justice in the context of health care, on the nature of medical ethics, and on the implementation of health care policies. Some questions that might guide submission are: Is there a disjuncture between political philosophers' interpretations of justice and those of health care practitioners, policy makers and researchers? What are the issues at stake in justifying policies around AIDS treatment? How and by whom are legitimate health care needs to be determined? What justifies the inclusion or exclusion of certain groups in clinical research? Should health care practitioners be required to undertake a certain amount of
community service? How are public health insurance policies to be justified? What are the implications of distinguishing between first and second generation rights in the context of health care? Will the future of health care inevitably be determined primarily by rich, aging and politically well-connected populations, as in much of the western world, rather than by poor, vulnerable and politically marginal groups and societies? Comparative perspectives and case studies will also be welcomed.

The deadline for submission of papers is 1 February 2006. Three hard
copies of each paper, as well as an electronic version (preferably
MSWord), an abstract and a short (three line) biography, should be sent
to: Roger Deacon, Managing Editor: THEORIA, P.O.Box 50324,
Randjesfontein, 1683, South Africa; e-mail: deacon@ukzn.ac.za.

About Theoria:
Based in South Africa, Theoria is an engaged, multidisciplinary and
peer-reviewed journal of social and political theory. Its purpose is to
address, through scholarly debate, the many challenges posed to
intellectual life by the major social, political and economic forces
that shape the contemporary world. Thus it is principally concerned
with
questions such as how modern systems of power, processes of
globalization and capitalist economic organization bear on matters such
as justice, democracy and truth. How might such systems best be
explained? In what do justice and freedom consist? How might these ends
best be realized under the conditions both of advanced modernity and of
uneven modernization in the 'developing' world? In what, precisely,
do the problems of social and political identity consist, and how might
sense best be made of phenomena such as resurgent ethnic nationalisms?
And what, in addressing these concerns, is the scope of philosophy,
art,
literature, history, social and political theory and economics? These,
among many others, are the kinds of questions by which Theoria is
driven.

Theoria is Indexed/Abstracted in: International Bibliography of the
Social Sciences, Expanded Academic ASAP, Infotrac Online, Linguistics &
Language Behavior Abstracts, Literature Resource Center, Social
Services
Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science
Abstracts.

Theoria is published three times a year by Berghahn Books in
association with the Faculty of Human and Management Sciences,
University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
