[NIS_GS:] CFP: Church and State in Eastern Europe
Call for Papers
Symposium on Church and State in Eastern Europe
The Centre for Post-Communist Studies at St. Francis Xavier
University (Canada) and the Metropolitanate of Moldavia and Bukovina (Romania) are organizing a Symposium on Church and State in Eastern Europe to be held in Iasi, Romania, on October 5-7, 2005. We are looking for papers.
The first fifteen years of post-communist transition have made it evident that the kind of democracy Eastern Europe will have is determined by a number of actors, only part of which are political. Throughout the region, the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, and Protestant Churches have tried to become dominant forces by imposing their views on democracy through direct and indirect political engagement. Studies on religion and politics in the region are called for because, among actors on the political scene, these churches are best positioned to define the democracy taking root in Eastern Europe. Opinion polls reveal that there many people view Christianity as apt to fill the ideological void left by the 1989 collapse of communism and bring a measure of morality to the political process.
Moreover, surveys show that the churches and the army enjoy more popular confidence than elected political bodies such as Parliaments. Eastern Europeans' preference for non-electe!
d hierarchical organizations highlights their disenchantment with a
democratization process that allows politicians to be more preoccupied with meeting their own interests than with solving the urgent socio-economic problems those countries face.
The organizers of this symposium are looking for scholars who would like to present their reflections on some of the above issues. The presentations will be in English and limited to 20 minutes (with another 10 minutes for questions).
We aim to publish the proceedings as a peer-reviewed volume with a restigious western publisher. Participants are expected to cover their conference-related expenses.
The Romanian host will also organize a 1-2 day visit to some Moldavian
monasteries where participants in the symposium will have the chance to view these beautiful medieval monasteries and enjoy Romanian hospitality.
To facilitate the organization of the Symposium, please
indicate your participation by March 1, 2005 by sending the paper title and an abstract of 200 words to Dr. Lucian Turcescu
