I am writing an article on the changing significance of International women's Day from the Soviet to the contemporary post-Soviet period. I am intrigued as to why this Soviet holiday has survived the collapse of the Union and how it has changed from a monumental public holiday to a private celebration. I aim to analyze commentary in the media on the holiday as well as canvass private opinion in Russia.

I believe by analyzing these discourses we can answer questions about the changing significance of public and private spaces, the morphology of the ideal Soviet/Russian woman, the relationship of the individual to the community,
and role of celebrations in the contemporary Russian society.
