A group is a number of individuals who have put one and the same object in the place of their ego ideal, and in so doing, identify with one another in their ego.
What unites group members in this schema is attachment to something external, such as a leader or an ideal, rather than to one another. Thus, a group is held together by mutual identification in love. Love, as is well known from Freud’s work, is always aim-inhibited sexual desire, which involves rerouting libidinal energy onto the idealisation of the beloved, which is in turn a projection of the ego’s own need to be loved. In this way, the group works ‘to the extent that individual ego ideals have been replaced or absorbed by a common object’, while the unattainable and nonsexual status of the beloved keeps the natural rivalry of individual group members at bay.
