First band to be signed to Rick Rubin’s "American Recordings" label. Vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan got together in Southern California in mid-90s. Music mixes rap, metal and a touch of jazz while lyrics express importance of heritage and politics. Admit their agenda is "not purely political" however and suggest they could quite comfortably write a love song. Hardly a Celine Dion one though. Immediately earned cult status. Eponymous debut album arrived summer of 1998, securing slots on Slayer and Ozzfest tours as well as supporting role on final Black Sabbath show in 1999. In fact, they’ve toured incessantly since 1998. Tour dates continued throughout the first year of the Millennium, though they have now finished their recent tour of America.
