Пейзажная живопись была одним из любимых жанров в искусстве XVII века. Он возник из Голландской республики, которая провозгласила независимость от Испании в 1648 году. Рост капитализма и богатства страны, нуждающейся в новой национальной идентичности, привели к революции в живописи, известной как голландский Золотой век. Многие голландские художники были известны своими реалистичными изображениями пейзажей, которые заметно отличались от более ранних периодов, делая их поистине уникальными и впечатляющими.

Голландская пейзажная живопись в целом характеризуется драматическими контрастами света и тени, холодных и тёплых цветов, спокойных и бурных эмоций, твёрдых и жидких элементов, статической и динамической энергии. Зимние пейзажи, закаты, сельские пейзажи с животными, моря, реки, городские пейзажи, леса - всё это было очень привлекательно для голландских художников. Для них природный ландшафт обладал таким величием и очарованием.
