Tonight I gave a speech in Berlin on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. I spoke about the walls which are growing in ourselves, in our minds. The builder of those walls is fear. The ongoing refugee crisis breeds anxiety, providing an opportunity for radical populists to emerge on the European political scene. Liberal democracy is the essence of Europe. This is the model which is being undermined by populists and our external opponents. Protecting it is our greatest task. At the same time, we must protect Europe's external borders- we cannot save Schengen otherwise.
