A Chinese review of US human rights released on Friday said Americans were “haunted” by guns and the US used cruel torture “indiscriminately”...
China’s report on the US, released on Friday via state news agency Xinhua, began by observing that the US global report had commented on other countries “while showing not a bit of regret for or intention to improve its own terrible human rights record”.
It went on to discuss US problems with gun crime, racial discrimination, the growing power of influence groups over government, rising income inequality and US agencies’ spying on American citizens.
Its comments on torture were particularly graphic and described “brutal” methods including “sleep deprivation, waterboarding, long-term solitary confinement, slamming prisoners against the wall, lashings, death threats and even “rectal rehydration”.
The report also highlighted sensitive political issues including the deaths at the hands of the police of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner in New York. Both deceased were African-American and their cases intensified the debate over racism in the US that came to the fore once again this week following the murder of nine black churchgoers in Charleston by a white man.
China’s report said: “According to an analysis of federally collected data, young black males in recent years were at a far greater risk of being shot dead by police than their white counterparts — 21 times greater.”
