Бельгийский город Брюгге уже несколько веков является синонимом мастерского кружевоплетения. В веке оно здесь стало едва ли не основным источником доходов для бедных слоев населения. Производство кружев начало набирать обороты в 1717 году, когда епископ Брюгге Van Susteran предложил беднякам поправить свое финансовое положение посредством этого ремесла. Назвать идею блестящей было трудно: трудоемкая кропотливая работа приносила совсем небольшой доход, но другого выхода у людей не было. Обучать неимущих этому искусству взялись волонтерки из Собрания Апостольских Сестер. Они так рьяно принялись за работу, что вскоре смогли хорошо отладить производство и даже получить большее помещение. К 1860 году количество учеников превысило 400 человек, кружевоплетение расцвело пышным цветом, а его история обогатилась множеством доселе невиданных узоров.
Тонкое льняное кружево изготавливалось руками маленьких девочек, ведь только их чуткие пальчики могли уловить момент, когда нитка становилась нужной толщины.
