I'm a bit confused with the question about a semicolon.
There is shown, that the right variant is "A semicolon is most commonly used to link (in a single sentence) two independent clauses that are closely related." But as I heard, punctuation rules in English and in Russian are similar in general. And in that case variant "A semicolon is most commonly used to separate (in a single sentence) two independent clauses that are different" seems to be more suitable.
Can you explain what is right then?
