To start, you’ll need your scrap piece of paper, a pair of scissors and some glue.
Using your scissors, cut the scrap paper into a circular shape. It doesn't need to be perfect so don't worry about getting the compass out. If you need a little help just grab a bowl and trace around it with a pencil. I just cut mine by sight though and as you can see below it's far from a perfect circle.
The larger your circle, the bigger your flower will end up.
You then need to cut your circle into a spiral. Again, if you don't trust yourself, use a pencil to mark the spiral shape. Remember that nature isn't perfect either though and irregular patterns and widths simply add interest.
The wider the spiral the higher you flower with be. In this example I started at a little over 1cm wide and ended up at a little over 2 cm wide. I like to get wider as you get closer to the centre of the spiral as the centre will end up on the outside of your rose giving the illusion that the petals start small in the centre of the rose and gradually get bigger towards the outer petals.
My finished spiral. When you get to the centre of the spiral leave a little circle as this will act as the cap to the bottom of your rose. This will make more sense later on.
To give you a sense of scale I've shown my circle in relation to my hand below - though keep in mind I have long fingers.
Now for the trickiest part. Grab the outside end of the spiral and start to wind it in on itself to create a coil. This is the beginning of the centre of your rose and needs to be the tightest part.
Keep winding the paper. Once you have the beginnings of your rose you can loosen your grip a little and allow a little more space between each layer of paper.
The closer you get to the end of the spiral of paper the looser the coil should become.
You should see your rose taking form.
Once you reach the end of the spiral you will see why the circle cap at the end is needed. Time to grab the glue.
Lying the circle cap flat, put a decent side dob of glue on it.
Then push the flower down on top of the glue. Hold your finger there for a few seconds to allow the glue to do its work.
Take your finger away to admire your handiwork.
The rose looks a little lonesome on its own so lets add some leaves.
Using the cutoffs that were created when you cut your circle, sketch a leaf out in pencil and cut it out.
Create another leaf slightly smaller than the first.
To add more texture, I also cut some narrow strips from the remaining paper.
From the scrap piece of paper I started with only a few small bits remain.
As I'm not a fan of putting things in the bin, I scrunched up these last few bits in to little balls and put them in the drawer. These will feature in a future tutorial. I'm not sure what yet.. a flower centre perhaps.
Back to the pressie, I added the rose, leaves and strips but felt there was still something missing.
That's better. A pink biodegradable eco-ribbon to tie the two colours together.
