Значительный интерес представляет и его картина «Суета сует», выполненная в жанре натюрморта. Этот сюжет, посвящённый бренности человеческого существования, впоследствии получил широкое хождение в голландской живописи XVII века.
Картина являлась, вероятно, оборотной стороной портрета или створкой диптиха. На второй створке мог быть запечатлен заказчик. Подобного типа портреты с изображением на обороте «memento mori» (помни о смерти) нередки в творчестве Брейна.
Череп в нише

Их тип заимствован художником из нидерландского искусства, где они существовали уже в XV в. Запечатленный с анатомической точностью череп, помещенный в холодную каменную нишу, напоминает о том, что сумрачная патетика бренности, суеты сует проходит через всю культуру северного гуманизма. На листке бумаги помещено двустишие: «Нет щита, который заслонил бы от смерти,/ Поэтому живите, пока не умрете».
