Эта картина с ее крайними контрастами света свечей и тени, чистой геометрией форм и медитативным настроением является примером наиболее совершенного и характерного творчества Ла Тура. Уроженец герцогства Лотарингия на востоке Франции, Ла Тур был во многом обязан караваджской живописи, но склонялся к еще более упрощенным формам. Спокойная атмосфера этой картины прекрасно соответствует сюжету - Марии Магдалине, свидетельнице Христа, которая отказалась от плотских удовольствий ради жизни в покаянии и созерцании. Она изображена с зеркалом, символом тщеславия, черепом, эмблемой смертности, и свечой, которая, вероятно, означает ее духовное просветление.
