MSD Sweater tutorial (8 pics)

More work for the swaps I’m in. This time I went to the local “Everything’s $1.00″ store (how convenient!) and bought several pairs of socks with the intent of making sweaters. You can get some good bundle deals of 2-3 pairs for a buck. This sweater came from just such a set. I ended up using 1.5 socks and had enough left over to make 2 hats (tutorial to come after this.) I had planned to use a different pair of fuzzy slipper socks, but they turned out to be too short in the torso, so I decided to use the pair featured instead.

Once again not a lot of measuring was done for this. I did a lot of eyeballing, and only once in the process tried it on my doll to see if it would fit correctly.

Steps:

1. Cut the socks in half at your desired length. One side will be used for the torso and collar, the other for the sleeves. I wanted a kind of raglan look so I chose a patterned sock and a solid color sock. Save the toe piece for hats.

2. Cut the piece you want to use for the sleeves in half.

3. Take the piece you want to use as the torso and cut two slits on either side for the arms. I cut right along the sock fold about an inch and a half. Cut small because it’s easier to cut more to fit the sleeve than it is to sew up the side if you cut too large.

4. Turn the pieces for your sleeves inside out and pin, sew up the side to complete the seam, then turn right side out. Pin to your sweater where you made cuts for the armholes and attach.

Checking the fit. At this point I was going to add shoulder pieces and then buttons for a kind of faux-military style, but I decided against it. Perhaps next time. (By the way, this is Peter, an Asleep Eidolon Shine. I can’t wait until his new wig comes from Crobidoll).

5. From the remaining part of your sock cut a piece about 2 inches wide (middle piece). Don’t cut up the side, leave it intact.

6. Fold the newly cut piece in half and pin to your sweater for the collar. It’s ok to stretch it a little bit to fit. Sew it on!

The finished piece! This was very easy to do and only took me about an hour and a half to complete. If you do one yourself please send along pics, I’d love to see it!
