Paolo Veronese
(Italian, 1528-1588)
Bathsheba at the Bath (c.1575).
Oil on canvas.
Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.
The theme of David and Bathsheba has an old David.
Artists generally follow the Bible, in which David, after sending a letter, sent a young messenger to Bathsheba rather than going to meet her in person.
Veronese may have followed another scenario, where it is David himself who comes to see Bathsheba.
