"I don’t know whether it is the coming Christmas season, the onslaught of exams on the horizon or the weather but it seems as though now more than ever there is a never ending supply of problems that need solving. Circumstantial issues between friends, problems within the family framework, broken relationships and the constant issue we all face in trying to maintain our spiritual identities all seem to be at the forefront of our struggles. I, myself, am not immune to this either. In recent weeks, I too have been the victim of questioning and struggling to commit to what God has planned for me and what he’d have me do…
This afternoon as I was working here at my desk I was reminded of a simple truth that I am subject often to forget. I think many others forget as well as we head into this busy season. The words of an ever familiar song entitled “Transatlanticism” go as follows:
“I need you so much closer”
As we wake up every morning we are presented with a choice. To consciously choose to follow God and lean on Him in our daily walk or to rely on ourselves. Might I suggest that the more we beckon Christ closer to our hearts and minds the more in sync we will be in His will and plan for our lives. James McDonald in his book, The Way of Wisdom says that the primary purpose of fulfilling God’s will is to first be saved and then sanctified. To be saved takes a moment, to be sanctified is a never-ending daily walk that beckons the closeness of our Savior.
So to those who feel heavy - laden, burdened and stressed out…hear God today. Pray an honest prayer that at the root of it calls Christ to ourselves. James 4 says: “draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” The idea here is not that God intentionally distances Himself from us but that we move away from Him when we choose to rely on ourselves rather than Him. When we consciously decide to come back to Christ…He comes closer. Let that be our focus in these stressful times: I need You so much closer…"
