She was one of the most famous French actress/courtesans of the 2nd Empire and was known as “Mademoiselle Maximum.” It was said that if you put her on top of Mount Blanc, she would still be accesible. She was voluptuousness in flesh and blood. Her most famous lover/protector was the Duc d’Aumale. Traveling by train to see the Duke, Leonide shared a first-class compartment with some society matrons whose country estates were in the vicinity of the Duke’s chateau. Each was showing off how well she knew its master. “I’m lunching with the duke tomorrow,” announced one. “We’re having tea with him Saturday,” claimed the next, while a third kept up the round with “ We are invited to dine there on Sunday.” At this moment the train pulled into the station. Leonide rose and said with her sweetest smile, “And I, ladies, am sleeping with His Highness tonight.”

Cora Pearl (1835-1886)
Born Emma Elizabeth Crouch in England, she became the most famous courtesan--the Queen of Tarts--of the French 2nd Empire. Her clients were the wealthiest and most powerful men of her day, whom she called collectively her “Golden Chain” of lovers. She was a fine horsewoman and said to be kinder to her horses than she was to her lovers. From 1865 to 1870, she was at her dazzling zenith as the most celebrated courtesan in Paris and was mistress of the Emperor’s brother. “I can say that I have never had a favorite lover--the handsome young and charming man, who has loyally offered me his love and his money, has every right to think that he is really ‘my favorite lover,’ my lover for an hour, my escort for a month, my friend forever--that is how I understand the matter.

Marguerite Bellanger
Born Julie Leboeuf, she is known as the courtesan who became mistress to the Emperor Napoleon III in the early 1860s. Her bold and open liason with the Emperor prompted the Empress Eugenie to confront Marguerite openly saying she was killing the Emperor and must give him up. Some say she gave birth to the Emperor's child.

Céline Montaland
Ses parents étaient tous deux comédiens, son père étant un ancien acteur du Théâtre du Vaudeville. On dit qu’elle serait née dans le théâtre même où son père jouait. Légende d’une actrice prodige ou réalité ? Il est difficile d’y répondre aujourd’hui.
Enfant extraordinairement précoce, plus encore que ses devancières Léontine Fay et Virginie Déjazet, elle parut dès l’âge de quatre ans et jusqu’à ses six ans à la Comédie-Française, notamment dans :
* Gabrielle d’Émile Augier le 15 décembre 1849
* Charlotte Corday.
À six ans et demi, en janvier 1850, elle fut engagée au Théâtre du Palais-Royal, où elle ne tarda pas à faire fureur, car elle savait non seulement jouer la comédie, mais aussi chanter et danser. En septembre 1850, Labiche écrivit une pièce spécialement pour elle, La Fille bien gardée. Il s’agissait d’un véritable rôle et non pas d’une apparition de figurante ou d’utilité. Sa prestation fut saluée avec enthousiasme par les critiques, en particulier par Jules Janin : « Trouvez-moi un regard plus habile à interroger, un sourire plus habile à répondre ; imaginez un geste plus vrai, une voix plus juste, une suite plus alerte d'intentions fines ; des mots si bien dits ! des grâces si bien trouvées ! une naïve ! une malicieuse ! une coquette! un bel esprit ! Elle chante juste, elle danse juste, elle parle juste, elle se tait juste, elle écoute juste. Elle est vraie, elle est naturelle, elle est savante. On l'admirait, non pas comme un enfant précoce, mais comme on eût admiré une très grande artiste jouant le rôle d'un enfant. »
