Dogs
 
If it’s true that the eyes
are windows to the soul
then these dogs each have two
deep brown souls not blue
(and of course his eyes were brown
not blue)
These two dogs with their brown eyes
and deep souls
are a lot more like people
than some people that I knew
They love me unconditionally
and take their pleasure
from pleasing me
and sometimes you
Are they saints?
Yes and no
Like us they do
some things that are foolish
and some things that are genius
They know what they know
and question not the existence of god
or the vagaries of humanity
But they do what they do
based on their belief that we
are their’s as they are ours
and together with us
they can become very peaceful
or play like little demons
Creatures like us
and sometimes more human
than we could ever hope to be
And we can be more canine
than they at times
Faith they have in our goodness
and if we frustrate or we disappoint
their high expectations of us
they forgive and their love knows
that they are in this for the long haul
Always trusting and never begrudging
our frailties or our inconsistencies
So are they saints or are they sinners
Like us?
Who knows? Not I for I know not
what is behind a dog’s eyes
other than deep brown souls
overflowing with love and understanding
