Первоначально песня "heart of glass" была записана в 1975 году под названием "Once I Had a Love" она была гораздо медленнее и в ней звучали нотки блюза и регги. Песня часто исполнялась во время гастролей, затем в 1978 была перезаписана под тем же названием, но стала более адаптированной под рок. Когда Blondie записывали свой альбом Parallel Lines, диско играло очень большую роль в музыке и продюссер Майк Чапмэн (Mike Chapman) решил обновить песню в стиле диско, что сделало песню такой, какой мы знаем её теперь и помогло стать ей одной из самых узнаваемых записей Blondie.
