Flyleaf

Originating from Texas, the heavy rock band Flyleaf formed in 2000 when lead singer Lacey Mosley shared songs that she had written with drummer James Culpepper. After a brief period of playing together, they discovered guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann, members of another local band that had recently folded. In 2002, bassist Pat Seals joined the group and they became known as Passerby.

Doors opened easily for Flyleaf's 2005 self-titled debut on Octone Records. Just like every start-up, they played locally building a fan base that gave them opportunities to open for acts such as Bowling for Soup, Fishbone, and Riddlin' Kids. By 2003, with word of Mosley's songwriting and outstanding live performances spread through Texas. It was this ‘word-of-mouth’ reputation that earned them a spot at the annual South by Southwest music conference. A contract from Octone was wisk through the normal tedious contract negotiations to signing by 2004.

Flyleaf, their first release issued in early 2005 benefited from the pro production team of Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Blind Melon) and Brad Cook (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age). "Cassie" and "Breathe Today," catapulted Flyleaf's reputation, as did their lives performances, lead the band to front for Staind, 3 Doors Down, Saliva, and Breaking Benjamin.
For the fall 2005 release, producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, the All-American Rejects) got together with Flyleaf in Los Angeles. 20 songs were cut down to 12. Mosley's heartfelt vocal performance and Bhattacharya's and Hartmann's guitar playing found a perfect balance.

Using her real life as fuel for lyrics, Mosley confesses that her challenging childhood lead her to drug and alcohol addiction but she learned much from her journey. At the time of their first release, the band was committed to sobriety.
