Такт первый: поршень опускается из верхней мёртвой точки в нижнюю мёртвую точку. Впускной клапан открываются с помощью кулачков распределительного вала, и в цилиндр попадает свежая горючая смесь;
Такт второй: поршень идёт из нижней мертвой точки в верхнюю мертвую точку, попутно сжимая топливную смесь. Температура смеси сильно повышается. Все клапаны во время этого такта закрыты.
Такт третий: в конце предыдущего цикла сжатия топливная смесь поджигается с помощью искры от свечи зажигания. В то время, как поршень проходит путь из верхней мертвой точки в нижнюю, топливо уже сгорает. Под действием тепла сгоревшей порции топлива рабочая смесь расширяется, тем самым толкая поршень. Так как при своем расширении газы выполняют полезную работу, этот ход поршня можно назвать – рабочим ходом.
Такт четвертый: после нижней мертвой точки такта расширения открывается выпускной клапан, и поршень, который уже поднимается вверх, вытесняет отработанные газы из цилиндра двигателя. Как только поршень оказывается в ВМТ, выпускной клапан закрывается и начинается новый цикл.
